Share home partition with other distros?

I have Arch and Ubuntu Hardy installed on my laptop, and I am still giving Arch a test drive with Ubuntu as the backup system. I use Gnome on both systems, and I tend to configure packages the same way. I read here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … ostcount=3) that it's possible to share the home partition, but I want to get some more advice first. Is there any dangerous consequences of doing so?

Well, you could get trouble from different versions or setups of programs conflicting with each other over your config files, also, you need to make sure both your users have the same uid or the permissions won't work, other than that, it's pretty safe, although it's always advisable to keep backups of everything. I shared my home directory between ubuntu and arch when I was making the transfer too, and it went relatively painless, although from a config perspective, it became such a mess after a while I just cleared it out, created a new user, and copied the configs I needed back to it

I think that's a good description of the average experience with this the first time you try it. It works OK until you decide to stick with one or the other distro, then you have a bunch of crap left behind to clean up. As already stated, just make sure your important files are backed up.

Thank you. I am not worried about the configs, since there are only a few worth backup. It's good to know that it's fairly safe to move on.
