I was partitioning the hard drive on my laptop and damaged grub. Now I get loading error 22.
I followed the instructions for reinstalling in the wiki and this is the error I get.
[Arch Linux: /]#grub-install /dev/sda
/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.
Any help?
I followed all the instructions, and the mounting commands went without error. My arch partition is sda6. My vista partition is sda3. The menu.lst file still exists, but grub was damaged when I eliminated my ubuntu partition and moved arch back 40GB.

I'd throw the install CD back in and run the setup, but ONLY do the install grub step. skip all others. I had to do this last week because windows broke grub.

# grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

I tried both suggestions and get this.
[Arch Linux: /] grub-install /dev/sda
Probing devices to guess Bios drives. This may take a long time.
Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device.
grub-install -recheck /dev/sda gives this:
[Arch Linux: /] grub-install /dev/sda
Probing devices to guess Bios drives. This may take a long time.
/dev/sda7: Not found or not a block device.
Note: in between trying these commands, I removed ubunutu from grub. Ubuntu was erased during my partitioning.

Sda7 is not a partition on my drive. It is mentioned in grub in the arch entry, though.
D I need to mount my vista partition too, or just the arch one?

This smacks of a hack!
Have you been trying to "overlay" Arch on top of an existing Ubuntu install. Was the disk paritioned for ubuntu and are you trying to reuse any of the partitions. Whilst possible, you need to know what you are doing because linux stores system maps and device maps - you canto just simply reuse paritions.
In my view you have got lost somewhere and dont really know what you have done, thus it would be difficult for anyone to assist ou if that is the case.
You should reinstall and make sure you delete all paritions and allow arch to reconfigure the drive.
For the time it has taken you to post these issues, you could have reinstalled.

Simplified partition layout:
old layout :
vista:sda3 ubuntu:sda4
yesterday
vista:sda3 ubuntu:sda4 arch:sda6
today:
vista:sda3 arch:sda6
I don't want to reinstall. It took me a long time to get everything up and running. I think it can be avoided.

hi, I don't know if it can help but I've heard of this:
http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/
I never tested it anyway
good luck

With the help of super grub disk, I restored grub.
I figured out why the bootloader had been lost.
When I partitioned, I deleted sda6. Arch was sda7
Arch became sda6 because the old sda6 was deleted. Arch though it was sda7 when it was sda6. I had to edit grub and fstab to correct that.
