stop X

I'm sure this is simple, but how do I stop X?

Fustrated Windows users have two options.
1. Resort to the throwing of computers out of windows.
2. Resort to the throwing of windows out of computers.

Re: stop X

Depends on your setup! The above works, but X may restart once it is killed.

init 1
or
/etc/init.d/*dm stop

are other solutions.

Re: stop X

control alt backspace and /etc/rc.d/gdm stop both restart x.
Changing runlevel to 3 works, but I want a faster way, that doesn't involve a reboot.

Yes it does I guess if you don't start gdm as a daemon.

No need for rebooting. init 5 (or whatever you use (for me it is init 1 and than init 3)) and you are back in business.
