Maybe your media doesn't really support that speed: try to lower it to - say - 8x; and use rewritable media for testing.

dvd is an LG gh20ns10 on a asus m2n-sli mother board.
How can I tell, whether it is recognized by my system, what modules need loading, and troubleshoot?
OK, well, using a high quality DVD (maxwell) works A OK....using a cheap spindle of imation brand fails to dump cache everytime.

Hi,
exactly the same problem has been reported in Mandriva and Ubuntu. This seems to be an operating system driver problem:
Mandriva problem: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=86682
Mandriva bug report: http://expert.mandriva.com/question/103807
Ubuntu problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=790880

I had a similar problem with an LG external drive where k3b would not burn. However nerolinux worked. Perhaps for now you could try nerolinux. Nerolinux is in AUR. It is unfortunately not free software.

The issue addressed here is related to an internal DVD writer, which hardware interface is SATA. But external drive you use have USB protocol. So your recommendation cannot be used here, I am afraid.
However there is recently a Linux kernel bug related to this SATA DVD Writer:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10743
To see which modules are loaded, which hardware is recognized, you must look at /var/log/messages or stdout of dmesg command.

I can confirm the same problem.
No problem reading dvd/cd,
no problem burning cd-roms.
But problems when I burn a DVD.
I have a laptop with sata/pata dvd drive :
ata2.01: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L532A, TI51, max UDMA/33
scsi 1:0:1:0: CD-ROM TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532A TI51 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
Used to work fine if kernel < 2.22
I set the BIOS to "only" use PATA (before "first SATA then PATA")
Then I can burn the DVD , but can't read it afterwards . It give me :
