Blank Screen After Exiting X (No WM Installed)

I installed Archlinux 2008.3-1 core x86_64 on a laptop that has an nVIDIA GeForce Go 6100 video card. It's currently using the newest NVIDIA drivers and the default xorg.conf file generated by nvidia-xconfig. No desktop environment or window manager has been installed.
Executing startx opens a basic desktop and when I exit X I get a blank screen. The systems works -for I can execute commands (startx, reboot and halt work as they should), but I can't see a thing.

As I don't have a desktop environment, posting the files xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log isn't easy, so I'll describe what I think could be the cause of the problem.
There first device (nVidia 0) is MCP51 PCI-X GeForce Go 6100 on PCI:0:5:0, the second (nVidia 1) is MCP51 PMU on PCI:0:10:3 (I would really appreciate if someone could explain me why I have two devices and only one video card, is this multi-GPU?)

These are all the warnings and errors of the latest Xorg (in order):
(WW) /usr/share/fonts/TTF doesn't exist
(WW) /usr/share/fonts/Type1 doesn't exist
(WW) /var/rub/acpid.socket doesn't exist
(EE) [nVidia 1] Failed to initialize nVidia graphics device
(WW) [nVidia 1] Failed to initialize nVidia graphics device on GPU
(WW) [nVidia 1] PCI:0:10:3!

The other device doesn't seem to have a problem, all the modules are correctly loaded (according to the log) and the screen resolution and depth are automatically detected (even though they're not set in xorg.conf.)
I can post the complete files if required (I guess that booting from a liveCD and copying them is my best shot.)

I decided not to go one step further (installing a desktop environment) till I knew what caused this error (for I want to learn and not only use the system.)
Thanks in advance.

I don't know what could be causing your problem, but I always do hwd -xa before running nvidia-xconfig. You could try that, also how do you kill X? what commands do you use and can you boot back into X after getting the blank screen?

Re: Blank Screen After Exiting X (No WM Installed)

I exited X with the command exit or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, I always got a blank screen but I could execute reboot, halt or startx to restart X (I must be able to execute any other command, I wouldn't see its output, though.)
If I rename xorg.conf (the only configuration file in /etc/X11) and start X (forcing it to create its own configuration file) I can access and exit X without problems (but this configuration doesn't use the nVidia drivers nor does it detect my screen resolution and depth).

I installed hwd, updated it and I didn't complete the execution of hwd -xa because it detected some errors. This is the error output of hwd -s (I would've posted the complete output but the colored text in shell transforms into unreadable characters):
/usr/sbin/ddcxinfo-arch: error while loading shared libraries: libx86.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

There seems to be a problem with the co-processor, the second device (nVidia 1) described in my first post.
What would happen to my video experience if I executed hwd -xa and then removed the non-working device from xorg.conf?

Hello, I have the same problem with ATI. The logs don's seem to contain any errors, but there is one thing I can't take in.

Using vesa, I can run X and exit without problems. If I once run X with vesa, then exit and switch to radeon, I don't have problems either. Till the next reboot.

Thank you for any hint.
