I've recently installed Arch on my iMac, having watched 2 DVD's via VLC, I must say I am disappointed with the playback quality of the movies. I am wondering if any other people using the same iMac & the proprietary ATI drivers are experiencing the same poor quality playback? It is at its worse when there is the most visual demands.
I tend to think that the ATI drivers are responsible, as my other PC running Arch has an nVidia 7950GT/512, & it plays movies very well.
I'd love to hear of a fix for this problem, though I'm not hopeful?
Thanks in advance.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.

The only thing I can suggest is to check whether it's also the case with mplayer and xine.

Thanks for your reply lucke.
Yes, it is the same in mplayer & totem.
The sound is ok, the video is not smooth, & horizontal banding in sections of the display can be seen throughout most of a DVD movie. It looks like the video card is not powerful enough to deal with the large screen, which of course is not the reality.

The catalyst-8.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is vastly improved from when I started this thread some months ago.
Watching DVD's with VLC or whatever player is thankfully perfectly acceptible now.
