Error parsing root device at boot

Hello everyone

I did a foolish thing and ran a selective upgrade on my Arch box after about 9 months.  It broke.  I'm getting a kernel panic right at the get go.  Initially I thought it might be a device naming issue so i set up persistent naming according to the wiki.  Alas that has not helped.

I'm not so much asking for help but rather support.  I plan to get in with a live-cd, check the pacman log, and either revert the kernel or install what ever I missed.  At least I will know what happened though.  I might have skipped udev, I fear.

Obviously I'm a bit rusty so any other pointers much appreciated.

Re: Error parsing root device at boot

How early was the error/what boot stage (bootloader, early kernel, initcpio, udev, initscripts), what's shown on the ten lines before?

Re: Error parsing root device at boot

I reckon it's in the initramfs stage.  Certainly seems to be before INIT runs, at least as far as I can tell.

Re: Error parsing root device at boot

Can you boot with the fallback init image?

Re: Error parsing root device at boot

ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/blah'
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected

And no on the fallback image.  I updated some pkgs that might have been required but i didn't rebuild the init images, i think that'd be a good idea.
