getting Archie to boot....by doing FSTAB work and GRUB work

Hello Forum

i am trying to get Archie linux working.

I have managed to install Archie to my hard disc drive

my next job is to do the FSTAB and then configure the GRUB settings (menu1)....can anybody help me?

my machine currently just boots up to a grub prompt

grub>

i noticed that Archie has a GUI tool on the live desktop concerning FSTAB.....could this help me?

what do i need to do type and do to configure GRUB?

try booting up from a live CD and running:

grub-install /dev/sda (if you want grub installed to the mbr of the first disk)

I dont think you'll have to chroot to do this but I *may* be wrong

Vinceuuuu is refering to Archie. I didn't know that z4ziggy is still working at this project. Looks pretty cool what I read on the page. I planed to try Archie out for a long time. I think I'll give it a spin tonight...

So far, the only advice I can give you is to have a look at the wiki, search for grub and fstab, I'm sure you'll find something useful. Report back if not.

edit: I expected to find an ISO which is up to date. Which ISO did you use?

yes....the CD used was

Archie VIKA 0.6.....quite recent.

The man who wrote the "install to hard drive script" is on the Archie forums.

the GUI version of the HDD installer does NOT work in Archie....it is very buggy.

but you run the HDD installer script from a terminal and it works...but of course, it does not cover FSTAB or GRUB...

i found the other distro called ARCH OFFICE....now this is completely automated and looks very easy for anybody to install...

if you read at the bottom it mentions FSTAB and the GRUB boot loader......

these 2 topics are the only things needed to get my Archie going here....i was wondering if i could use the normal Arch CD to boot....and select those topics from the menu and my changes would then affect my HDD Archie?

not sure if the normal Arch CD even has those 2 topics...or if they are only present in the Arch Office CD...

would it be OK to use Arch office?....does it matter that it is 2 years old?....could i just update it when it's installed?

I think it would be way easier to install grub by hand (write a /boot/grub/menu.lst) and adjust the /etc/fstab also manually.

Archie was a good project, but it's been dead for a while now. Try FaunOS or the arch-live CD for a ready-to-boot system, larch or archiso for Arch-based build-your-own-live-CD alternatives.

never found the Arch Live CD......does it exist?

i managed to find a YOUTUBE video showing the install process for Arch linux.

Then i found a page describing how to put a DE into Arch.

finally i discovered that the only configuring most people require of Arch is to tell Arch about the correct mirror web site...

.....also run the dcpeth terminal program to get Arch to install and set up your ethernetc router/ web...

then you are up and running.....you download and install a GUI desktop and then you can start the DE from the command prompt...

If your intention was to install Arch, then the official install ISOs are the best option. Your reference to Archie give me, and others, the impression that you were specifically looking for an Arch live CD, hence the various earlier responses. Using YouTube as an installation aid is innovative, but we usually refer people to the official install guide, which is included on our install ISOs, and then to our wiki for further information.

thanks very much for your help.....anyhow.

as it happens, i have managed to install Arch and get it working by using the official Arch iso files.

people have helped me on this forum...

true....i did use the youtube video to achieve things...it really helped...

other hints i found from the web...

for example....to get your wired internet working......you can simply run the app called.....dhcpcd eth0

then i use pacman to get a desktop installed...

currently, it's just about ready to log into the GUI desktop...

some little more help is needed...

About the Arch Live CD......presumably this does not offer a HDD install feature?.....and if it does?....is it all completely automated

i know very little about Linux....Archie nearly worked but people advised me the project was old....and it may not be such a good idea using Archie...

Archie did install to the HDD...but it did not do any of the FSTAB or GRUB settings....hence it would not boot up into a linux desktop right away.....i never figured the rest out
