#pacman -Ss virtualbox
...
nada.
I'm on arch64. Community is enabled. What repo is it in? What's the package called?
In the meantime I just installed qemu. Does anybody prefer qemu to virtualbox?

It's in AUR.

EDIT: Grr... WiLLiE beat me to it.
Oh well, if you want the binary version, check out my link.

virtualbox doesn't build/work on x86_64. That's why it's not in the repo.

Powerful x86 virtualization - binary version (non GPL - free for personal
use and evaluation)There is a binary available for x86_64. I use it and it works quite well. You just can't distribute it.
You have to add the archlinux france repository to /etc/pacman.conf

I prefer Virtualbox to qemu [which I use just to test livecds] getting a virtual machine running is very easy to do... you find more features in personal use version

I'm trying to compile virtualbox-ose-additions-modules with 2.6.25 and it fails: pastebin
Any advice?

VirtualBox 1.6.0 could be the solution. See http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Changelog, last bullet point of the verion 1.6.0 fixes/additons.
Offline
Yeah I read about 1.6 just after my post. I'm going to try it out but as I don't have time to rebuild virtualbox in the next 2-3 days I might wait for the package in community to be updated. Go Romashka, go ![]()
edit:
Ok, I had to give it a go ![]()
The new version needs gcc34 to compile.
virtualbox-ose-additions compiles fine.
virtualbox-ose-additions-modules fails with this error.
virtualbox-ose fails with this error.
Any ideas?

Hrm, you might like to change the title of your first post to reflect your new issues, this way you'll get more clicks from users with the same problem and therefore contextualized help related to said new issues.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Well, good idea but it's not me who started the thread. I should probably start a new one... ![]()

VBox ose has no USB support.
One of my main uses for it is to run an XP VM to print to a stupid Windows only laser printer.
My kids use IRiver (windows) software to manage their MP3 players.

So, do you use virtualbox-bin or vmware? I started to use virtualbox-bin 1.6 today. So far so good.
I'd still like to be able to compile virtualbox-ose...

Hello all,
I am having a terrible time here with Virtualbox. I am running Arch64. I have the
[archlinuxfr]
Server = http://repo.archlinux.fr/x86_64enabled. And when using 'pacman -S virtualbox' I install 'virtualbox_bin-1.6.0-1'. Now this is all fine and wonderful except that I can not launch Virtualbox. If I type 'virtualbox' in terminal I get a command not found. If I use a 'whereis virtualbox' I get 'virtualbox:'.
So what is the deal here? Why does virtualbox not work and seem unfindable? I have the 'vboxdrv' module loaded.
Offline
chances are you must "source /etc/profile" or log out and log back in before the virtualbox binaries will be in your path.
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

I have logged out as well as restarted. What command should launch virtualbox? virtualbox, virtualbox_bin, and vbox do not work. Also, whereis will not work on those either.
Is there some installation step that I am missing? I just don't get it.
Offline
VirtualBox not virtualbox unless that package does some renaming... try pacman -Ql virtualbox_bin if that still dont work.
Offline
Thank you. VirtualBox shows up in 'whereis' and launches. So I am happy now. I apparently missed something though. If 'pacman -S virtualbox' will install it, how does one know to use VirtualBox the find and launch it?

I hope I understood your last sentence, but it think it was answered in the previous post(assuming that you want to know how to determine the name(s) of the executable(s) of a package like VirtualBox and not virtualbox in this case):
pacman -Ql pkgname
That way, you see all files belonging to a package. It should be fairly easy to spot the executable in most cases. You could however list only executable files by doing something like this:
for i in `pacman -Ql virtualbox_bin`; do if [ -x $i -a ! -d $i ]; then echo $i; fi; doneOffline
