The syntax for the awesomerc changes for nearly every update of awesome. The reason awesome does not use your .awesomerc is because of faulty syntax. To check what is wrong type "awesome -k" while in awesome, it will tell on what line the fault lies.
Awesome-git seems pretty stable and is the upcoming awesome 3, if you install this version (with yaourt) copy the "/usr/share/awesome/awesomerc" to "~/.awesomerc" .
