HPLIP Simple Problem

Hey all, I installed HPLIP using yaourt -S hplip and then directly configured CUPS through the web interface to successfully get my HP printer printing properly.

However, when I run any of the various hp-* tools from the terminal, they don't work. The programs start and then just freeze. Is there a solution to this?

When I run hp-setup as root, this is what happens:

[root@vg-x2 vg]# hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 7.0

Copyright (c) 2001-7 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2)
Services and Status Daemon ver. 9.3

Copyright (c) 2001-7 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.

under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

That's all. It freezes there. Pressing ctrl+c spits out:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/hp-setup", line 342, in <module>
    w = setupform.SetupForm(bus, param, jd_port, username)
File "/usr/share/hplip/ui/setupform.py", line 158, in __init__
    self.hpssd_sock = service.startup()
File "/usr/share/hplip/base/service.py", line 51, in startup
    time.sleep(0.5)
KeyboardInterrupt

How do I get hplip working properly?

Re: HPLIP Simple Problem

Did you start the daemons required from /etc/rc.d? I don't recall the names, but they all start with 'hp' in the name.

edit: I just checked and don't see the daemons in the new hplip package. Perhaps they're not required anymore?

Re: HPLIP Simple Problem

It may not help you much but 'kdesu hp-setup' works fine here.

Oh, and the daemon is not required any more.

That doesn't necessarily mean you haven't got kdesu. But if not, do you have gksu? sux? Otherwise you could try logging in as root and running it from there.

If you have 'sudo' set up, that might do it too, but I don't know the details concerning that.

Re: HPLIP Simple Problem

Did you install the optional pyqt3 package?  When you install hplip, Pacman spits out a message saying pyqt3 is required to run hp-toolbox.  It's probably required for all the hp-* apps.

It's a warning, so I don't think it's required. I'll try and post back anyway. Thanks!

Re: HPLIP Simple Problem

Did you setup and run the CUPS daemon?

You need CUPS running for HP lip to work

I did and I'm sure he did. Let me try this on Linux Mint. I'll report back.

Re: HPLIP Simple Problem

Yeah, CUPS is running.  Running hp-toolbox just shows those messages and hangs until I Ctrl-C out of it.  Then I get this:

[max@killterm2 hplip]$ hp-toolbox

What exactly did you do to run it after you installed it?  Anything special I need to do beforehand?

Well Linux Mint is an "easy" distro so I just installed pyqt3 and ran hp-setup, then the other stuff just worked. It should be just as simple on Arch but I don't know why it wouldn't work.
