Re: Archlinux and you

To me, this is like making love to your lawn-mower. If you have some fun, and if the lawn-mower isn't hurt - just go on and be happy (we will not look at it). But Arch is a tool - not more, no less. And yes, it has a soul, a philosophy, a great community - that's why I like it. It is still not as precious as a human being.

Make sure you turn OFF the lawn-mower first.

Re: Archlinux and you

Personally, I have never had a proprietary op on any computer I have owned. I have an idea that open source software can work under a Darwinian/selective ideal. Of course this necessitates a full interchange of 'information' between community members. This is it's strength. I'm sure we all know this already : that a global community of users/developers can provide better software than monopolistic companies.

Re: Archlinux and you

Well - I have been with archlinux a looong time - and I do love it ...

I have installed it;

I have upgraded it;

I have compiled on it;

I have run it to do work on;

I have run it to play on;

I have praised it;

I have cursed it;

But really folks - I have NEVER 'slept' with it - or had kids with it.  The original analogy simply doesn't work.  The point being made by the original author is a good one - and I applaud his making that point.  I just wish he hadn't used an analogy that made me wince and which curdled my milk.

I get it too. It's a strained analogy to be sure, but I understand what he was trying to say. And it makes perfect sense.

I agree with rsn451. and as far as the description Mr.Elendig gave, I thought it was a very good analogy, of course not to be taken so literally.

When I first found arch, the community was rather small, and I didn't see it as a good, or a bad thing. I feel the same today. I will say, that with Arch being such a valiant gem of a linux distro, how could it not become popular with the masses? It's always so gracfully kept up with the ever changing linux world, and I'm sure it will handle it's ever growing populariy no less gracfully.

Re: Archlinux and you

I think the analogy certainly has some substance to it, but Mr. Elendig stretched it pretty much to breaking point there. Tell me you didn't hear some creaking and twanging sounds while you read it, I dare you. tongue

However, this bit is absolutely on the nail:

Archlinux was/is created, maintained and developed, by free will, by sacrificing time, energy and money. Before you start demanding something from it, you should ask yourself: What have I done for arch? Do I really have the right to this from it?

Exactly. And as a corollary to that I'd say that it's perfectly fine to use Arch without contributing, provided you don't then go around complaining unconstructively, or demanding features or changes. The right to do that has to be earned. Otherwise, be eternally grateful that someone has taken the time and effort to produce such a great distro, and keep your mouth shut. Like me. wink

I've been surprised over the last few months at how many people seem to find this idea odd or controversial. Maybe I shouldn't have been. People always want something for nothing.
