Hey everyone,
I've installed Arch a few weeks ago, and I certainly like it, before I used SAM, Sabayon, Ubuntu and Sidux but I didn't feel very comfortable with any of those, I like the control I have with Arch and the Wiki and the Forums are simply amazing.
But now I'm having a problem burning an ISO on a CD-RW using Brasero in Gnome and in Xfce. Initially I expected Brasero would be able to erase the CD first and then burn the image, but there's when I realized about this problem.
Brasero begins the erasing process saying it will spend about a minute, but after a short time the system begins to act strangely and hangs without writing a bit. Then I just tried to erase the CD and the same problem. Then I used a blank CD-RW and nothing happened, either.
I thought Brasero was the problem so I uninstalled it and replaced it with GnomeBaker but it still doesn't work.
Finally I've discovered that there's a problem associated with wodim that usually gives an output similar to this (partial):
wodim: No write mode specified.
wodim: Asuming -tao mode.
wodim: Future versions of wodim may have different drive dependent defaults.
wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limits.scsidev: '1,0,0'

Support for that may cease in the future versions of wodim. For now,
the device will be mapped to a block device file where possible.
Run "wodim --devices" for details.

Apparently the last messages turn into an infinite loop and that's why the system hangs.
I also discovered that this problem happens with any CD-burner program, except Nautilus-CD-burner and I suppose it's because Nautilus-CD-burner somehow is controlling the CD-writer the moment I insert a CD not letting any other program access the drive.
I've deactivated gnome-volume-manager to no avail.
Has anyone else had the same problem? Help please.

You are not alone. ![]()
I didn't think I had any problems with disk burning and I don't using both graveman and gnomebaker to burn cd's or dvd's BUT if I try to blank a cdrw neither gui works. There doesn't seem to be alot of info on the forums or through googling. I, personally, don't use cdrw's very often so just using command line
cdrdao blank --device /dev/cdrwworks well enough for me although
wodim -v dev=/dev/cdrw -blank=fastdoes not. Wodim doesn't even seem to see my writer with wodim --scanbus. I burned some random files on that blanked cdrw I just did now to see if things are fine and they seem to be. I'll report back if there are further troubles (I don't burn cd's or dvd's that oftern).

Did a little more research and finally got graveman and gnomebaker to play nice with cdrw's. See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CD_Burning_Tips
After following the bottom part of the wiki and changing the pata hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to ide, making new kernel26.img and rebooting--after changing /etc/fstab to reflect drive changes from sdaXX to hdaXX--I can now blank a cdrw in graveman and gnomebaker. If you have an ide disk burner, like me, that might help you as well. ![]()

Thanks for the info bgc1954 I'll give it a try. I'm not sure if my interface for the CD is IDE because I'm using my laptop (Dell 620) and the interface for my HDD is SATA. I remember having tried something that was referred to changing the modules and regenerating the mkintcpio but I reverted everything back to normal because I was afraid that the HDD might become unstable or something.
I will post my experience.
This is what happens when I try to erase a CD-RW with wodim:

Before making the change I was able to write a CD-RW with the command:
wodim -v dev=/dev/cdrw something.iso
After I tried the recommendation about changing the pata driver to ide my problem got worse.
wodim --devices now gives me an error and when I try to erase the disc, wodim ejects the disc asking me to reinsert it in order to fix it appropriately but still does not work.
I removed GnomeBaker and installed graveman but graveman is not able to detect the drive either thus not working at all. Finally I decided to set everything back to "normal".

Anyone else?
Isn't this a common problem?

Can you write the iso to a blank cd-r with the following command?
cdrecord filename.iso
I'm not sure, but you may have to be in the "optical" group. Perhaps try as root.
