swfdec video not working...

So I can't get swfdec to play flash video. The audio and vector stuff work fine, but on youtube for instance, all I get is a block of black pixels where the video should be. I have this working on fedora, so I figure it's either some kind of upgrade breakage caused by arch's release cycle, or I'm forgetting something obvious. I have installed all gstreamer plugins. Any help?

(Oh, and I did get some errors in the terminal output, but I got those same errors when it was working in fedora.)

Re: swfdec video not working...

Yep, I have a completely up to date Arch64 system. Well, just in case, here's the output I get from viewing this youtube video, although I get basically the same result on any video from any site. I use epiphany instead of firefox, but that shouldn't make a difference, plus I tried it in firefox with the same result.

swfdec is working here also on 64 bit. My build is "home grown". This is the output until I stopped the video from above. I'm posting this in the hope that this will help:

Re: swfdec video not working...

Anyone? I don't want to be that guy who just keeps posting and posting until someone helps, so this'll be my only "bump" post, but I know someone out there can help with this. It doesn't seem to be a very technical issue, but it effects my browsing a lot.

Re: swfdec video not working...

I upgraded to Firefox 3 RC 1 (pre), went to Youtube, and Flash wasn't working (I jump back and forth sometimes between swfdec and Flash). All I saw was an empty square. So I thought that maybe an upgrade broke Flash, and it's a hassle anyway, so I went ahead and installed swfdec again. The same thing was happening. On a whim I decided to click in the square and swfdec started up like normal. Flash was reporting some X errors from the console, but I didn't bother to jot them down. swfdec is reporting no errors at all. Try this and see if anything works at all.

--EDIT--

By the way, this is only true on my 64 bit box. The 32 bit machine is alright with Flash.

--EDIT 2--

It turns out that RC 1 and anything Flash aren't getting along so well on the 64 bit box. Reverting back to B5 helped the situation a lot.

Re: swfdec video not working...

Nope, still doesn't work for me. I can see all the controls and stuff at sites like YouTube, and I can hear it, I just can't see the video itself.

Re: swfdec video not working...

Here's something that can be tried. You'll need to have FFmpeg on your system to do this. Grab the PKGBUILD from ABS. The original PKGBUILD has the configure line:

./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-static --enable-gtk \
    --enable-mad --enable-ffmpeg --disable-gnome-vfs \
    --enable-gstreamer --enable-soup --with-audio=alsa

Replace the "--enable-gstreamer" part with "--disable-gstreamer --enable-ffmpeg". If you're using a newer version of FFmpeg then the one from the repos, you may have to tag "CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/include/libavcodec" to the end of the line too. Don't add that until you know that swfdec fails to build against your FFmpeg. If it wouldn't have, it will now!

I have this same problem (x86_64, swfdec-mozilla-0.8.0-1)  Have you found a solution?

Re: swfdec video not working...

It was actually a problem with my X configuration (no idea why). When I switched to fglrx, it suddenly worked, and I used that for a while. Then I went back to open source drivers with a completely different config and it still worked. Unfortunately I don't know what exactly did the trick. My new xorg.conf is quite different than it was before, and all the changes were made at the same time.

Re: swfdec video not working...

I'm using the latest nvidia driver (177.80-2) but this swfdec "black output" issue has been occuring for some months now and there have been several releases of the nvidia driver since then.  I haven't touched my xorg config since the beginning of time, so not so sure that I'll have the same luck.  Thanks for the reply.

Re: swfdec video not working...

Admittedly this post is rather old, but as of yet it still is unresolved (at least for me).
I am also using Nvdia drivers and get no sound or video on youtube. All movies appear to load, but I get a black box where the video should be. Here's the error as seen when running firefox from the console:

SWFDEC: ERROR: swfdec_video_decoder.c(375): swfdec_video_decoder_errorv: error decoding video: no suitable decoder for video codec 2
SWFDEC: ERROR: swfdec_audio_decoder.c(201): swfdec_audio_decoder_errorv: error decoding audio: no suitable decoder for audio codec 2

This would seem to point to a problem with swfdec. And like vilefridge pointed out, this has been going on for months, though it had been working previously.

I was able to get gnash working using the PKGBUILD from here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=37300, although the video quality was very low. (Perhaps it can be configured?)

I know these are different projects but both can be configured to use ffmpeg, so I can't understand why it would be a codec issue as stated by the error message.

Re: swfdec video not working...

The quality of swfdec has been going downhill since the day they got involved with Gnome. I think that they did better work when things like deadlines and release builds weren't so important. It's too bad. It was looking really great for a while.
I also would like to know what exactly is keeping Gnash from looking good. It performs well and interfaces nicely with very new FFmpeg builds and yet the quality is so-so.

Re: swfdec video not working...

I managed to get swfdec working again, however it hasn't improved.  Only some Youtube material plays.. Google Finance charts don't work...

snag these:
swfdec-mozilla, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg (this should be a dependency)
