Problem after upgrading Sane.

I've got an HP PSC 2175 usb printer-scanner. The scanner was working fine with the hpoj-0.90 driver but this latest version of Sane doesn't detect the scanner anymore, though the ptal-init setup command does detect and configure it right. How could that be?

hi
/etc/sane are the config files
check dll.conf if your backend is enabled
and set your backend properly
and update sane to the latest version
to set up hotplug properly

if your backend is enabled than don't know how to go on
'sane-find-scanner' find it?
i don't know how to setup hpoj right now sorry
i don't have the time to check it at the moment

I upgraded Sane again today. Sane-find-scanner still doesn't find the scanner not even specifying the device /dev/usb/lp0.

depending on how you are accessing the usb device you may have to restart hotplug or restore device permission for libusb devices that you may have in your rc.local. usb hotplugability in linux is still very tenuous i might remind you.

This is something really pisses me off about Linux. Usb is not new anymore (in fact it's pretty old), and it does not work fine.

Well, how do you want it to work? Hotplug is there, it also has all the tools to have every permission issue with usb fixed. I use it to make my camera accessible to a specific group. Maybe you should look at that.

It all comes down to permissions.

Nop, it doesn't work either as root. But It's not usb that fails in my case, it's xsane, I was just pointing something that pisses me off often about linux. I was just giving an opinion...

That's fair enough. All I was saying is that the problem you have with linux is something that's been solved and it's an unfounded opinion. Specifically that voicing it shows your lack of knowledge on the subject.

I'm not karakabadabadabadoo. I'm not blasted. Okay, I know I am not a Linux expert, but I think that usb doesn't work as it should (mmm....better). At least plug-n-pray is known to be hard to setup and conflictive.

The upstream author of xsane recommends removing your xsane config files when upgrading. I added this message to the most recent xsane release, but you might have missed it.

rm -rf ~/.sane/xsane

This is gonna sound real dumb but... do you remove .sane files before upgrade or after..... :?

I don't know if the same holds true for 'sane'. The trick to get 'xsane' to work is to remove the the config files from your user's home dir. It doesn't matter if you do it before or after upgrading, but you _may_ see problems using xsane if you do not remove them.

it sounds as though this is not a concrete fact. is this just a recent suggestion? i have all the most recent sane and sane related versions installed and have nary an issue with them nor have i ever had to remove dot files.

Well then if that the case should it be reported as a bug ...a quick google shows that the problem is not just Arch's .....

In my case after last update of sane I backed up config files then its just a case of moving them...

Yeah, it's not an Arch problem. When I packaged up the latest xsane, there was a warning issued from the makefile about potential problems upgrading and using your old configs. Since there were issues with Arch users, I just put the warning/solution in the install scriptlet hoping to save our users the headaches.
