Wierd recording problem

Hello
I'm having this unusual problem with recording any sound - what I record appears to drop about an octave.
I first noticed this in Skype (the people on the other end couldn't understand what I was saying) then I tried to record a sample with the Gnome sound recorder. The same thing happened.

It's not that the frequency is halved - the recording takes the same time to play but just much lower.

I am running Arch64 and Gnome. According to Alsamixer, I have an ATI IXP card with a Realtek ALC658D chip.
I'm sorry there isn't much data here - please let me know if more is needed and I'll do what I can.

Also sorry if this is covered elsewhere but I couldn't find it if it is.

many thanks
C

Re: Wierd recording problem

Up/downsampling probably. And this one sounds like a hardware problem, onboard chips can normally only do duplex at 44100, while 48000 either playback or recording so you may have recorded at 48KHz. Try setting a different rate and then see if the problem persists.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
