upgraded to 2.6.25.3-1 today, and compiz just freezes the whole system.
i have no idea even where to start, so i can say i use compiz git, and nvidia latest.
i downgraded back to 2.6.25-1 (thank god for /var/cache) and everything is back to normal.
does anyone else has the same issue?

There appears to be problems with nvidia and the latest kernel. Try out nvidia-173.08 to see if that helps you (suggested on arch-dev-public list)

my x-server also freezes with catalyst 8.4-1.
with radeonhd everything works normal.
perhabs the nvidia/ catalyst driver needs to be recompiled?

If you don't want to use nvidia-beta, you'll have to use patches : http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=110088

I had issues with the last Kernel as well - 25 was speedy as heck, the next was bad (sluggish, fails, seg faults constantly) and this new one I got today from Unstable seems to be good again... fast, no fails and random seg faults (yet)....

There is a new nvidia build in testing that fixes it (you don't have to use the beta version).
