Earlier today, I decided to jump into Arch, it was relatively easy to set up, even wireless went without a hitch, pacman, however, is proving itself to be a big problem.
First off, /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist doesn't exist, I even reinstalled Arch incase I had screwed something up on my original install, still, I have no mirrorlist file.
In both installs, I specified the mirror I wanted in the installer.
When I run
pacman -Syyit hangs at
::Synchronizing package databasesand eventually outputs
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.pacific.net.au : Connection timed out
error: failed to synchronize core: Connection timed outI can ping a variety of sites, including the mirror pacman is trying to connect to.
Any help would be much appreciated.

try to change mirror. comment that server from /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist or comment all servers and leave only a server close to you

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

As stated in the original post, /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist does not exist.
Either way, I can successfully ping the mirror, so I see no reason as to why I would not be able to connect using pacman.

what version of pacman do you have? maybe you installed an old version and the configuration are in /etc/pacman.d/current /etc/pacman.d/extra.
you can see the configuration for mirror in /etc/pacman.conf
[current]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/current
...
i can ping that mirror but when i'm trying to connect it fails

I just installed Arch, I have whatever is on the torrent ISO.
After a bit of a look, it seems that I have a different mirrorlist for each repository, core, unstable etc.

Are you using an old install disc?

As far as I know I'm using a current disc, I just used the torrent on the "Get Arch" page.
"Archlinux-i686-2007.08-2.core.iso" is the file name of the ISO I'm using.

you could use the latest iso if you prefer not to download all updates. i prefer ftp install because i install the latest packages
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso/2008.04-rc

Right, I'll try this, it seems odd that an outdated ISO is on the only torrent link on the page.

So, I've updated to the newest ISO, and I now have a /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, but pacman still hangs and eventually times out.

why don't you want to look in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and change the mirror? just put # in front of the server that doesn't work
