gajim not working - cannot connect to jabber server

I installed gajim to use my jabber account at swissjabber.org.

Now, when configuring gajim and then prompting it to log into my account, nothing happens. It simply doesn't connect. I get a message like 'Could not connect; check your connection or try again later.'

I have reset my password, tried it with the new one. I tried to change ports, everything...

Initially I was given the notification that my avahi daemon isn't running (was deactivated in rc.conf). So I just activated it (issuing a /etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon start); later on I rebooted..

I tried logging in using Pidgin - that didn't work either. Eventually I found an online client - using that one to log in works. So I assume it's not a problem with the Swissjabber servers (their website actually shows some nice figures of them up and running).

Any ideas what I could do to fix that?

Right now I am even connected to GoogleTalk under Pidgin, so the protocol itself should be working too...

EDIT: I just asked a friend to try it on his Ubuntu setup - for him it works.

EDIT2: I actually get the following messages when starting it via a terminal:

$ gajim
Requires docutils 0.4 for set_classes to be available
Session Management support not available (missing gnome.ui module)
Network Manager support not available

Don't worry about these messages, and avahi support is for discovering local clients.

It could be a port problem, you should try to set a custom port, depending if you want to use no encryption or TLS...
You should also open XML console first, then try to log in, and check if you get any (error) messages back from the server.

Btw last stable Gajim was released a long time ago, in the mean time developers were very active and I suggest to anyone to try gajim-svn (it's also in AUR). List of changes and improvements is huge. Best Jabber/IM client at the moment IMO.

I opened the XML console and then tried to log in - nothing happens. I do not receive any replies. I will try the svn version now though...

Hey, please try to reproduce with latest svn. If you still have problems don't hesitate to join gajim@conferences.gajim.org and we'll see what we can do for you :-)
