aGNOME

Hi. GNOME in Arch isn't nice in relation to GNOME from user-friendly distros like Ubuntu or Fedora. Developers of friendly distros wrote many patches, which we can use in arch - but it needs some work, to harmonize well with system. Ubuntu have more than 2k patches! Some of them really rox, in example this for nautilus.
I think we can make something like KDEmod - we'd use patches from user-friendly distributions, to increase usability and functionality. Of course, it may need much work, but it's worth. Now user needs to apply patches by himself - maybe it's good way to choose best patches, build packages with them and preconfigure desktop enviroment for him?
There is a git tree and wiki - http://github.com/bts7r/agnome/.

Re: aGNOME

Rather than creating dumb patched eye candy packages i suggest you put your efforts into improving GNOME itself as the latest releases seem to be rather crappy. Im sure everyone will appreciate more.
Unlike KDE, GNOME is modular already.

Re: aGNOME

Having 2000 patches across 100 packages that cover gnome is not really maintainable. These distributions have a whole programming team maintaining GNOME. Some of these people are even the upstream maintainers of the software. Now and then patches flow upstream and sometimes new things are implemented based on ideas from other distros. Getting in a simple patch is hard sometimes though. We're still applying a patch to gnome-vfs that I included since gnome-vfs 2.14 to provide applications with CD volume information, the gnome-vfs code says //TODO, I implemented it, but it hasn't been touched by upstream at all (yes, it's in bugzilla, including a revised patch for gnome 2.17 and up).

Re: aGNOME

I would disagree...I used to be a KDE user now I am a gnome user...and I just love how I DON'T need to install a ton of dependencies...Got 3 laptops running with minimal effort...
Finally...I don't see anything missing from Gnome (don't say about Amarok...I do respect Amarok...but I can do just fine with Banshee-1-svn) that would need additional patches?!
Don't get me wrong...I do respect your effords and concerns regarding gnome...But I wouldn't be proly "loving" the idea to have to install a ton of packages just to have a gnome desktop...
A seperate project? well yeah...that could be a nice idea (something like KDEmod)
