Strange sound problem. (sound w/ both speakers, then 1, then none)

I'm trying to get an openbox setup.
At one point, sound worked out of both speakers. Then suddenly, the left speaker stopped working. Shortly after that, both speakers stopped working, and no sound at all. I booted into KDE, and sound worked perfectly, so I must have done something screwy with my alsa. I'm not exactly sure how to fix it, or even what is wrong.

I have an M-audio revolution 5.1, using snd_ice1724. I can post other files if necessary

Well... I got this error trying restart alsa daemon!

[heleos@erebus ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/alsa restart
:: Saving ALSA Levels                                                    [DONE]
:: Restoring ALSA Levels                                                 [BUSY]
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1300: incompatible field type for control #1
                                                                         [DONE]

Don't know if that's a problem or not...

EDIT: booted into KDE again, and now sound only comes out of the left speaker...

Did you try with some recent livecd and check if the sound
is coming out of both speakers there too?

You can also try doing sudo alsaconf to select the proper driver
if a driver has been incorrectly selected.

Are the speakers dying ? try moving them around whil playing something or applying force in different directions to the plug or the volume button etc

Re: Strange sound problem. (sound w/ both speakers, then 1, then none)

I did an alsaconf, and made sure the correct driver was selected. I hope the speakers aren't dying, <6 month old Bose!

I did some extensive testing (plugged my headphones in instead) and the headphones work fine. I guess the problem only happens when the speakers are really low volume? I don't remember it being like this early, but if anything else happens I'll keep you posted!

Apparently thats not the problem. Now only the right channel works, on speakers and headphones.

It still may be a mechanical problem. Check all the connections all the way from the speakers to the computer and the front panel audio cables (or the jumpers) on the card or the mainboard

Re: Strange sound problem. (sound w/ both speakers, then 1, then none)

I did a complete clean of my computer. Pulled everything out, blew mounds of dust out of everything, coughed a little, then booted up. When I first booted up, there was only sound from the right speaker, but I remember this is a bug with alsa sometimes, so i ran alsa mixer and moved volume up and down annnnnnnnd it works?!

I noticed that my soundcard doesnt fit in my case very well, so instead of tightening it fully, i loosened it up a little, hopefully that will help.
