Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Anybody here running the latest Catalyst driver 8.6 on Arch? It would nice to hear how well it runs with the Arch kernel.

Just installed it using abs, seems to run just fine, even better than 8.5.

Only thing that bugs me is the two X processes but its prolly a feature and not a bug.

Yeah, I was on a two-week vacation and just recently got back.  I plan to look at my package list this weekend and update some stuff.

@Mikko777: I'm using 8.5 and I have two Xorg processes as well. But it seems that one of them is not "real": that's what I see from memory usage at least.

What's all about those two X processes? Can someone explain that to me?

It's nothing. It's just that:

I seem to get even slower glxgears with the new release and it still doesn't update (8.6)

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

The "frozen glxgears" issue is seen across many different brands of video cards.  It looks like an X problem, not a catalyst problem.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Thanks for the update. The catalyst 8.6 package runs better on my system (X2400 HD ATI card x16 PCI-e) plus I don't hany screen curroption anymore. Still flickering video playback but that will remain until the driver completely supports the composite extension.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Thanks for a quick release of the catalyst 8.6 driver.

I'm getting mixed results with the catalyst 8.6.  Glxgears now runs with the gears spinning and the tearing at the edge of windows in compiz is slightly better.  However, flash videos have become MUCH slower, I can count the frame rate on one hand with youtube in fullscreen mode.  I have tried commenting out xorg settings but nothing changes.  Interestingly, the frame rate is the same with flash videos regardless of whether compiz is running or not.  The xorg log is also showing more modules and extensions loading which im not sure if thats a good thing or not.

For those interested im running the latest packages in the stable repo.

Note that catalyst-specific configuration options (from the Device section in xorg.conf) are stored in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb and this file overrides xorg.conf.  If you're changing ATI-specific config in xorg.conf only, nothing will change - you need to use aticonfig (or just move amdpcsdb out of /etc/ati and it will get regenerated from xorg.conf settings)

With regards to the flickering video: try MPlayer with the "x11" output driver. It worked for me when I was using compiz. (i.e. no flickering)

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Had freezing issues with this new driver once installed.
Created a new stripped down xorg.conf, blew away /etc/ati/amdpcsdb, reinstalled 8.6.
Freezing is gone and glxgears runs as it should.

Here's a copy of my device section:

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Card0"
    Driver      "fglrx"
    Option        "DesktopSetup" "horizontal"
    Option        "VideoOverlay" "on"
    Option        "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
    Option        "PairModes" "1280x1024+1280x1024,1280x960+1280x960"
    Option        "Capabilities" "0x00000800"
    Option        "EnableMonitor" "crt1,crt2"
    BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

No Extensions listed in xorg.conf, no ServerFlags, and no modules.

Still have much to do in regards to this new ATI driver since switching from the radeon driver. Like getting my system back to where it was when I strted this upgrade yesterday. It's beyond me how installing a disply driver can be so time consuming.

VB

VB EDIT: Anyone with experience in setting up Big-Desktop? Horizontal I can setup fine, but due to hardware limitations I want to run a vertical Big Desktop, this is not so easy to achieve for some reason.

Also this is an ATI AIW 9600XT AGP card thats always identified as PCI anyone experience similar?

Many thanks.

I issued aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1 as root and the changes do take effect (i can tell from the xorg log), but they don't help the flash video problem.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Well, I finally have my 9600XT runnning a 1280x2048 screen size with the latest compiz-fusion running!
It took some playing but finaly got it working.
Now to get my TV tuner working so I can watch the tube here on occasion.

Still nothing on the PCI issue though, but this has been ongoing since I started using linux a few months ago.

VB

EDIT: After resolutions were verified to exist (xandr) I should add here the key was to set resolution via the system and not with catalyst.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Yipes, everything looked good with 8.6 for me, until xscreensaver locked up/froze while I was away for a bit.  Anyone else have this happen?  I run the GLMatrix screensaver if that's of any use.  I downgraded back to the 8.5 stuff (catalyst & utils) & everything seems fine again by the way.  I have an ATI 9550.

Also, I wanna again, and every chance I get, say, thanks for Arch!  Man it's the bestest.  Happy Arching everyone.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

Yeah, I've got the same problem.  The screen just freezes, the computer itself doesn't.  When I come back from away, I tap SHIFT to wake up the computer, then type my password and enter.  Then I have to VT-switch to VT1 and back to VT7 and I'm able to use X again.

This issue is known, and will probably be fixed next release.

Anyone running 8.6 on mobility? I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1900 and 8.6 didn't work too well with my xorg.conf (stolen from Cerebral earlier in the thread)... Have you changed anything in your xorg from last time Cerebral? Thanks for answering the GLXgears question.

I don't think I've changed my config in a while.  If anything, I've only removed more unneeded options.  Don't forget about /etc/ati/amdpcsdb

Anyone with stability issues?
Had two freezes today, both cases a hard reset was required.
Can't say it's the ATI driver as the logs catch nothing.

LOL, I miss the BSOD from windows.

Well...encouraged by your advise and a perspective of having more control over my display settings I've removed both, amdpcsdb and amdpcsdb.default from aforementioned folder. Unfortunately after rebooting my screen turned off when going into X and I couldn't find any method to change this. Do I miss something in my xorg.conf file, or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux Display Driver released

I wouldn't get rid of amdpcsdb.default - the driver still needs this file to work, and I believe it uses the default when amdpcsdb doesn't exist.  I don't see anything terribly wrong with that xorg.conf though
