I've ugraded to kernel 2.6.25 and new ati drivers...
'glxinfo | grep direct' reports direct rendering: Yes
but if I launch glxgears it freeze in a funny:
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 4032 requests (4031 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I'm rebuilding the old driver actually..
I have a ati mobility radeon X1400..
are you having the same problem?

I've tried to rebuild the old drivers over the kernel 2.6.25 and it fails miserably.. so I've downloaded the old kernel, drivers etc..
(see the wiki downgrade page if you have the same problem.. the first link have the needed files) and reversed the upgrade...
glxgears doesn't print anymore that error, but it still be "freezed" (the gears don't spin) .. so it's not caused by the last release.
if someone can give me a feedback I would appreciate.. thanks <<
edit: it started printing the message again... so it's not the new kernel/driver combination it's only the ati ...

I get the same issue with glxgears with 8.4 and 8.5 (which I haven't uploaded yet) - 8.5 gives me a host of other problems though.

same issue

Thanks for the feedbacks ^^
at least I'm not the only one ... (this is a very cold comfort)

Yep, glxgears is frozen yet it still prints out FPS in the terminal.

Nvidia + 2.6.25 here. Frozen glxgears but it prints out FPS correctly and 'glxinfo | grep direct' gives me green light. The neat gnome (?) screensavers deliver high quality 3D without any issues - dunno how else I'm supposed to check the 3D capabilities since I'm not a gamer. :-D

Wait, so thats not an ATI issue then?

Looks like a kernel issue to me. I'm having same issues with my laptop that's equipped with an ATI-card plus using the latest kernel. That card uses open source drivers and those weren't updated.
Offline
I have the same issue, just tried it now while reading this . Glxgears gives me about 2000fps. But the gears are not moving. That's probably the same issue. I have nv7300go and latest kernel from testing.
Offline
open source radeon here
Are u listening?

Just another nVidia report: glxgears appear but doesn't show any movements, it gives though output in the terminal pending between 6900 - 7100 fps using nVidia proprietary drivers for a 7600GT card. Same kernel in use.

I use the 8.5 catalyst driver and have the problem with glxgears too. A friend of mine, who has integrated graphics from intel and the i810 driver, has also this problem. We both use the 2.6.25 kernel.
But for me, the fgl_glxgears still works..
Offline
So it seems the glxgears problem is totally not catalyst related. Awesome.
Offline
I think it might be an xorg related problem? I have updated to a newer xorg (1.4? I think) but I haven't updated my catalyst drivers or the kernel. Frozen gears here, too.
Offline
Same problem: nVidia 8600GT, Kernel 2.6.25, nVidia 169.12-4.

ATI Radeon 9600pro
2.6.25
Open source ATI drivers, experiencing this issue as well. FPS prints out as expected, but gears aren't moving.
Offline
FWIW, same issue (frozen gears, correct results) here with intel driver.

Same problem: nVidia 8600GT, Kernel 2.6.25, nVidia 169.12-4.
Downgrading to my old nvidia drivers didn't do any good either. It might be xorg related too.
Well, I seem to have 3D rendering working so I don't mind much.

bug in glxgears?
Offline
Hm.. good thing my mirror is slow in `updating` itself and I saw this thread before upgrading my system. GUess I'll stick to 2.6.24 and previous versions of catalyst*

not to mention that the problem also exists with 2.6.24

I've been displaying stupidity; I didn't read carefully. I don't know -what- I thought, but I didn't think it was simply "glxgears is not working".
Offline
ah.. this may be a little (but not too much, since it's a ATI's driver problem)
do you know if it's possible to run compiz again with xorg-server 1.4.0.90-13 & catalyst 8.5-1?
I gave it a try last mouth and it failed... but this maybe a misconfiguration
everything worked, not very fine since I had to use the
"LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace &"
command to run it, but at least it worked since I used the xorg-server 1.2
thanks
