just a quick question from a very long time linux/ubuntu user:

i want to try arch but does it come with a package manager?

pacman itself is command line only, but there is a GUI called Shaman which is pretty full featured, or there is gtkpacman which is much simpler. There are a number of front-ends for pacman.

ok thank you.. what's the best one to use?

also does arch come with a desktop environment like kde oe gnome as i've just installed it and there doesn't seem to be one?

Pacman is like apt-get. But when you learn it, it is much easier then apt, and more powerful. In fact, it is one of the main resons to why I use Arch (also ABS).

Also check out Yaourt. Which can manage unsupported packages pretty easy.
