webbrowser

Hello to all of you using Archlinux,

I want to ask you something. I am using Archlinux with fluxbox and I think, my system runs perfectly. It's very fast, but I have one problem. I am using Seamonkey. Sometimes the browser becomes very slow and I have to wait. I can't even scroll. I have fast Internetconnection, so that's not the problem. Still can't find out what to do to make my browser fast. I used bevor firefox, but with it was even worst. I compiled seamonkey with abs for myself, but is not better.
So if you can give me an advice, I will be very thankful!

Thank you!

Re: webbrowser

I would give the new firefox3 a try, its alot faster than either firefox2 or seamonkey, if you want even more light weight i would try kazehakase from aur.

Re: webbrowser

Grab Firefix(3)-spookyet from aur, and build it with some nice cflags.
E.g. (on i686)  CFLAGS="-march=native -mfpmath=sse -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops"

Edit: No, that cflag line is not a joke, it actually do work big_smile

Re: webbrowser

I use kazehakase on a 900 Mhz Athlon. Its nice. You need not compile it yourself, it is in [community]

Even faster, but not yet full featured: midori or midori-git (in AUR).

The -fomit-frame-pointer switch should already be enabled.

Acording to gcc docs, it's only enabled in O2/O3 on systems where it do not reduce the ability to debug. And that means that it's not enabled on x86.

Re: webbrowser

Give Opera a try. I switched to it after Firefox started locking up on me for 10+ second long freezes. Nothing I did solved it, so I just gave up. Glad I did. Opera is very slick - fast, full featured, and reliable. I'm using 9.50 beta2. I can't remember if it's in AUR or not. I just compiled the source from Opera: http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml … form=linux.

Re: webbrowser

Ha now I feel like a fool. Here I have been using Opera all this time because of the mouse gestures, and now I find out every browser and its mother has them.

I like Opera because I can close it with an X in the upper-right hand corner.

Re: webbrowser

Opera is the bomb, not only because of the mouse gesturen but also because of the email client.

Re: webbrowser

I just installed Firefox3 (without pacman because arch contains very old beta) and I am amazed.
Hope this one will be soon in unstable or community or extra.

Re: webbrowser

Because ABS requires direct Internet access, while pacman can use a squid proxy.
I am amazed because it's much better than Firefox 2.

Re: webbrowser

As my signature states, I'm a fan of Conkeror, the emacs style mozilla powered browser smile It runs quite smoothly too, I might add. I used the PKGBUILD already in the aur - conkeror-git.

Re: webbrowser

There are plenty of lightweight browsers I would like to use but the lack of NoScript & Adblock keeps sending me back to Firefox. sad

Does anyone know of a lightweight browser that has at least a good equivalent to NoScript.
