here's what happened:
video playback was broken, so I tried enabling certain options as suggested on a phoronix thread...this fixed video playback, but has created really back fragments behind icons/text in certain apps, and on my desktop...I switched all the options back to see if this would fix it (as I thought it should), but there are still really bad fragments, and while I'm a generally competant person the xorg.conf is black magic to me, and we've never really gotten along
any help would be greatly appreciated.

libGL error: open DRM failed (Operation not permitted)
Are you using compiz while you do that command? If not, I suggest you add the following to xorg.conf:
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
Also, when changing options for the fglrx driver, you'll want to move /etc/ati/amdpcsdb away - AMD stores fglrx-specific configuration info in that file, and once it's set up, it will override any fglrx-specific settings in xorg.conf

not running compiz...although compiz was working, adding that section got rid of the message, and a combination of either adding that section or moving amdpcsdb corrected the fragments
thanks a lot
