[SOLVED] rc.conf <=> LSB config

How exactly does rc.conf translate to the Linux Standard Base way of deal with configuration files? Could someone provide [a link to] a description of what each section would be in the LSB?

(Hopefully I'm using the correct terminology; LSB seems to be what I mean.)

Arch doesn't conform the LSB.

We're totally non-conformist, dude.  *throws up the horns*

Seriously, though, we don't even try to be LSB-compliant, so if someone has done a mapping of what rc.conf matches in the LSB, I'd be surprised.  Maybe it exists, but I don't know of such a document.

Re: [SOLVED] rc.conf <=> LSB config

We are, however, pretty close to FHS-compliant. smile
The only thing that comes to mind is Arch's use of /usr and /usr/local may be a little different than what fhs recommends...at least that's the way I understand the language of FHS.
I actually like that Arch reserves /usr/local for the user's own purposes; it seems to be the most pragmatic solution since there are so many different package management systems. Reserving it for 'make installs' as a tertiary hierarchy, separate from pacman's /usr install tree is a great solution.
(It seems that FHS indicates that all programs should be installed in /usr/local unless I am misunderstanding.)

Re: [SOLVED] rc.conf <=> LSB config

You know what? I don't think that I asked the question that I meant...

I'm really just trying to figure out exactly how rc.conf works. What is done with the information? What makes DAEMONS=() work the same as /etc/init.d/? How is the information in the networking part of the file used? How does modprobe know what to do/how is the MODULES=() array like /etc/modprobe.d/? (for example)

Re: [SOLVED] rc.conf <=> LSB config

Well, the init scripts parse rc.conf to see what to do, for example /etc/rc.multi parses the daemons array and starts them up. /etc/rc.sysinit parses (amongst many other things) the modules array and modprobes them.

Have a look at  the beginner's guide appendix. smile

Re: [SOLVED] rc.conf <=> LSB config

Hey, look at that... New additions to the Beginner's Guide! I haven't really looked at it since my installation about a year ago.

Combining Barrucadu's post with the appendix (and viewing the rc.* files) has explained most of it to me. What sets up networking? It looks like it may be part of udev, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for all of the help so far!

EDIT: Oops. Looks like /etc/rc.d/network does that.
