folders stuck open/hanging won't close

I have been having problems lately with things that hang an example is if I open something like a folder and later try to close it it will stick or hang there until I reboot or log out and back in again . I have 2 gigs of ram and am running a e8400 duel core that is 3 ghz so it has something to do with Arch could someone tell me how I can fix this? it isn't happening all of time time but it seems to be happening more frequently .

What file manager are you using? Does the hanging only happen when using the file manager?

well the file manager I am using is thundar and if the file manager is what opens up the folders , but it also happens when I open up trash can Like I sad it doesn't happen all the time but it dioes happen a few times a day which is irrating

Are you running fam or gamin? Do you toggle hidden folders very often?

I am new to this I am not sure what you mean by toggle, unless you mean switching between things then yes I am always switching things multi tasking all I know is when I used to use Ubuntu I never had any problems with this it reminds me of back when I had a single core Pentium 4 it was a very good computer but even with 2 gigs of ram and a 3.4ghz processor it couldn't keep up with my multi tasking which I don't do allot all at once. but this computer I have now is a duel core 3 ghz which shouldn't have any problems at all so it must be something with the way My Archy is ( I am blaming me not the os lol)

I meant switching hidden files off and on.

The reason why I'm asking these questions is because Thunar becomes completely unresponsive for me on both of my computers under normal usage. Look in your log files. I can't remember which log it is, so look in the everything log (/var/log/everything.log). You'll probably see thousand of errors per second being dumped into the logs the last time it happened. This is known problem with Thunar, but it seems to happen a lot more with some users than others.

ok so I looked in the errors log file and I am thinking this is the error here "May 30 18:00:38 Shadowfire famd[3218]: failed to accept new client: Too many open files" the thing is there wasn't that many files open

Was there a bunch of them or only the one?

By the way, my "solution" was to replace Thunar with pcmanfm. They're very similar in looks. Thunar is faster and can be made more minimalistic, but pcmanfm has tabs.

If you want to stick with Thunar, and you're running famd, I would recommend that you drop it for gamin. It serves the same functionality (it's a fork of fam). If you do, remove famd from the daemons array in rc.conf and don't replace it with anything. gamin will start automatically. This will only help a bit though.

ok so I need to remove fam from the daemons load list? gamin do I need to download and install the packages?

I forgot to ask how do I uninstall it from my Arch . that is something I never knew how to do

To uninstall something that's a dependency of another program (in this case fam), you need to do this as root. It says "remove fam ignoring that fact that other programs depend on it":

pacman -Rd fam

Then install gamin:

pacman -S gamin

And yes, remove fam from the daemons line in rc.conf. Do not add gamin there. It's unnecessary.

You can try just the -R switch first. If you have anything that's depending on it, then -Rsc. If you decide to install pcmanfm, it will still use gamin.

By the way, the wiki has a great article on pacman and a lot of it's functionality. Take a look at it sometime.
