Cannot get past grub to install Arch :(((

Hi, I am trying Arch for the first time.

I downloaded this image of Arch Linux 2008.4 i686 (ftp install) from Linuxtracker.org: http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page= … 57cc10d881

Unfortunately, when I try to select the first option on the Grub screen (Boot ArchLive), it gives me a Grub Error 13: "Invalid or unsupported executable format"

I used Brasero to burn this from Ubuntu and had it verify the burnt iso as well as used a trusty guide to help me verify it in another way (make an iso from the cd and diff it between it and the downloaded one)

I don't know what's going on, but I only have one more CD-R and can't really go buy more at 9p.m.

Any suggestions, please?

Was this a bad torrent?  Should I have not picked the FTP one? It's my first time using an FTP version.

Thanks,
Brian

I checked out that link and ftp.archlinux.org/.. for the 2008.4 RC.  I compared one from the arch mirrors and from the torrent and they are byte-for-byte the same.

Really strange.. It shocks me no one has had this problem before.

just install arch from within ubuntu. save a cd or a dollar two.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … her_distro

This error is returned if the kernel image being loaded is not recognized as Multiboot or one of the supported native formats (Linux zImage or bzImage, FreeBSD, or NetBSD).

do u have a windows drive installed?

Yes, I do.  I have windows Vista, Hardy Heron, Fedora 9, and Linux Mint Elyssa installed. (Just about to overwrite Mint with Arch)

It's hard to believe that would be the problem though?

Thank you for that link to installing Arch from another distro.  I have seen that unetbootin supports Arch too, but I would hardly dare to use that with a release candidate.  I will read over the page when I have time after school tomorrow.

Thanks,
Brian

is the windows drive separate, on its own HD? Just out of curiosity, if it is, unplug just that drive and turn the computer on and retry the CD. In fact unplug all your HD's and try the CD, see what happens then...

BTW, installing arch from another distro is so easy. Once u do it u will throw away all your cd's, because if u can install through another distro u can also always fix arch through another distro, by using this same chroot environment.

Re: Cannot get past grub to install Arch :(((

the "fix" is to use the USB iso. it's a problem with your CD drive.
i know it's not really a fix, but it shouldn't be too hard to borrow a 512MB flash drive for an hour or two.

i had this problem, but didn't want to use an old iso, mostly cause the UUID feature isn't there. but works fine with USB
