I installed Skype through pacman yesterday. It loads up no problem but after but after I start chatting, it crashes. I checked dmesg and got the following error:
process `skype' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT
I downloaded a dynamic version from the Skype website and it also crashes as well.
Any suggestions?

Actually Skype and Pidgin both crash. I am curious, are you using the open source nv drivers with xorg-X11? Just curious.

The warning message you posted seems to be pretty common and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your crash. Have you tried to monitor the output with strace?

Yeah, after searching the internet, it turns out that the warning message was harmless. I never used strace before. I just downloaded it.

If you haven't started yet, from the terminal:
strace skype
It will produce information until you're done. Reproduce the crash the best way you know how... Call a friend! Let Skype die and strace will show you where things started to break down. It won't tell you the exact error, but it will give you an idea of where Skype is crashing. From there focus your bug searches.

pacman -Syu solved everything. I thought I had updated my system but I did not. I probably had the older libraries. Over two weeks with Arch Linux now and my system is pretty much stable. Just one little issue with Firefox and AJAX pop-up menus but that is all.
Edit: It had nothing to do with the configurations. Skype still crashed and I realized it was related to the sound configuration file. Skype crashed when it tried to play a sound notification. I just disabled the sounds since I found them annoying. Worked fine after.
Arch rocks!!!

I'm using bitlbee/skyped to control skype on a headless server, and it was crashing all the time. Turns out it was the same problem, and this saved my life thanks
The best solution to a problem is usually the easiest one.
