Hey, me again ^^
So, my arch is setup and X is working good.
But, what should I do now?
I`m still a newbie in this all Linux world, and don`t know the name of programs that comes with a full desktop.
For example
A extract/compress tool, I managed to extract in the terminal, but i prefer to do that in thunar (I already have thunar-archive installed)
I just would like to have some more generic programs, that almost everybody needs in a desktop ^^
Oh by the way, I`m running openbox.
Sorry if I'm not being clear, i got a terrible headache =/

I have found a lot of interesting programs from threads like this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=41168
There's also a small list of useful applications in wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … plications

for xfce4 there is xarchive
extra/xarchiver 0.4.6-6 (xfce4-goodies)
a GUI for multiple archive types
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Morra, thks \o
That's gonna be a long reading =p
wonder, just a question.
Independent of the archive manager I use, will it work with the thunar-archive-plugin??
I love to just click on a file and extract it, without needing to open yet another window XD

squeeze is good and light for extracting archives.
urxvt is a nice, light, fast terminal. (combined with screen, you'd never miss a terminal with tabs.)
cplay doesn't require the same configuring that mpd does and it works in a similar fashion.
feh is a great image viewer and you can use it to set wallpapers in openbox.
i like to use pypanel with openbox. it gives me a clock and it can be made transparent.
i've tried a few burning apps, but i always come back to k3b. for me, it's worth the bloat.

Hahaha, ok, thks wonder
Gnome uses file-roller right? Or at least ubuntu does... i think o.o
Firefox (spookyet build)
What is that? Not the firefox, that i know very well =p
this spook.... thing.

Oh by the way, what does additional packages comes with Firefox on Arch, since it doesn't use the official branding.
And, what program can substitute Open office presentations (or powerpoint)??
Offline
yes. file-roller
firefox (spookyet build) : http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15184

Ristretto is a terrific lightweight image viewer. I also use feh.
PcmanFM and Thunar are excellent file managers. (PCman also provides desktop icons if you're into that sort of thing).
I use gmrun for a run dialog. Tilda is my terminal; the best invention since unsliced bread.
Pypanel and conky for clock, and system info. For DVD stuff I use a convoluted array of stuff, since I can't find a DVD swiss army knife, and I doubt if one exists because I have been looking for 5 years- DeVeDe, k9copy, dvdshrink, xdvdshrink, DVDShrink and DVD Decryptor for windows via wine. I use Brasero instead of K3b because K3b, and all KDE apps, look like complete garbage and are hence too ugly to even merit their own existence. Xfce-mixer for system volume.
Rhythmbox instead of Amarok, (see above), for music.
What was the question again?

I just use Handbrake to rip and DeVeDe to burn DVD's, never needed much else.

Thks for the tips \o
I'll see what works best for me.
My biggest doubt was actually with the archive manager.
Rar, zips, tar, etc
But i'll se if that xarchiver works ok with those files.
Offline
based on file-roller i needed to install unrar and unzip. i think xarchiver will need that too

No problem there. Thunar / xarchiver is what I use. Works like a charm.

Maybe to throw a xfce counter to xarchiver -> squeeze
It roughly has the same capabilities (if not entirely the same), but it'll show directories as directories in the window... xarchiver just throws all files (with path information - nonetheless, sometimes it's a bunch) at your face
Also, with squeeze you don't need to always select to unpack with the path information intact, xarchiver will -in standard- just dump every file in the selected directory
Just my 0,02 cents
PS: Welcome to the family btw

Squeeze is without doubt my choice now =p
So much faster and it shows the folders hehe
Thks for the tips, i had some troubles finding how on earth to get icons working here, but now it seems to be ok.
For terminal, i don`t wanna try all the diferent flavors, so I'm going with gnome-terminal ^^
Does anyone know what program could I use to mount others Hard disks?
In ubuntu since I already had nautilus installed I was using it, but I don't want to install it again here. Or at least the comand line to that.
Offline
gnome-terminal/konsole are the two fastest terminals anyway, so no problem there.
the hal/dbus daemons should auto mount most disks....if they don't just edit the /etc/fstab file.

Yeah, I have hal installed, it mounts my pendrive ok, but I have some erros ejecting CD's.
But with hard drivers, thunar doesn't show anything else the file system and my home folder. So I don't know how to build my second hard disk installed.
I can use fstab to mount one hard disk, but I sometimes plug another one for tests and stuff, and for those situations I would need a program to mount...
Get it? o.o
(I don't even know exactly what I write)

There's a plugin for xfce for that... (Since you're going the xfce way anyway)
I don't really know the name anymore - but if you do "pacman -S | grep xfce" You'll most certainly get way too much information, but it'll teach you a lot in the mean time. The name shouldn't be too difficult: it's a plugin for disks... (Not free disk space stuff)

I'm not going the xfce way XD
I'm using Openbox only, with QT, KDE, GTK, whatever suits me =p

I think it will be better to start a new thread about this right?

Does someone knows of any program that can take shots of All (or at least 2) of my virtual desktops??
I installed scrot to take screenshots, but I don't think it can do that.
Linux is great for having 4 or more desktops, and I can take only one shot at a time =<

I should have worded that differently, I use it to create them, I of course use cdrecord to burn them.

esecially with a transparent background and a really wide font.
