Conky script - netstat output doesn't appear

For some reason, if I put a call  to a script in my conkyrc, and that scirpt contains an netstat call, the netstat call output gets truncated after 2-40 (exact number varies depending on what I try) characters and all output thereafter disappears. All output before the netstat call shows up, but nothing beyond the first X characters of netstat does. I've tested my script and it works fine in a normal shell, just not in conky.

Are there any tricks or complications to running certain calls in conky that might be the culprit?
