hi all,
I've just reinstalled gnome and this time I'm starting it with the "exec gnome-session" command in .xinitrc
the problem is that it doesn't show the shutdown/reboot keys but only the logoff one.
Do you know how to enable them?
Thanks

Those only appear if you use GDM

thanks for the reply alex,
do you know if exists an "alternative application" that give something equivalent?

You could create some launchers with something like gksudo shutdown now as the command, then find the icons - You'll have to type in the root password, but it works
I don't think that you can get them automatically in GNOME without a login manager

I'll try to create the menu launcher as you suggested,
I've used the wiki hint to run reboot/poweroff as normal user so I don't need the root password.
Thanks again alex

do you know why creating this file:
/usr/share/applications/poweroff.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Poweroff
Name[it]=Spegni il computer
Exec=poweroff
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-logout.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;System;
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
StartupNotify=true
do not work..
what I'm missing?

little update,
instead of using that .desktop file, I used alacarte to add in the "system" menu the "poweroff" and "reboot" commands,
anyway it seems like I can't set the right position,
I have:
System ->
Preferences -> ...
Poweroff
Reboot
*separator*
help
gnome-information
*separator*
Logout
instead of
System ->
Preferences -> ...
*separator*
help
gnome-information
*separator*
Logout
Poweroff
Reboot
this is not a big issue but I don't like it... and I can't understand where to modify that menu (alacarte don't permit this)
as you can see in my previous post I searched the solution even in /usr/share/applications/ without success...
do you know where I have to look?
why gnome is not KISS?
thanks for your suggestions, bye

Also, if you lock your screen with gnome-screensaver, there is an option there to log in another user while the screen is locked. This only works if you have GDM running

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

excuse me but I didn't explained very well the "problem".
even without gdm, I can add a menu "item" (is it said 'menu voice' in english?) with alacarte
example:
Name: poweroff
Command: poweroff ( <---- I can run this command as normal user)
Icon: path/to/icon.png
the problem is that I don't know how to sort/edit/delete the voices of the Places/System Menu(s) (full control only for the Application one, and I think this is because it's only for the current user),
I need to find where gnome stores the config files for "every" user to edit the other two menus..
I hope to have been more clear..

Marco, I don't think GNOME allows you to edit those menus; I think they may be hardcoded somewhere o_O
I've wanted this functionality for many years, but it has never existed. I'm not sure what the details are.
Perhaps a formal request/conversation with the gnome devs could enlighten us about why only some menus are editable.

Ive just tried to do the same thing. My poweroff command finally needed to be pu elsewhere, like in application menu
