I have seen a lot of similar threads, but not exactly the same.
xcompmgr is pretty much fine except when I try to resize the windows. Then it becomes very slow and choppy. I am using the open source nv driver.

I was having problems configuring the Nvidia driver, even with the nvidia-config tool it wouldn't detect any screen. However there is a new version out now, so maybe I'll give it another go.

Try xconfig instead of nvidia-config (if you use nvidia or nvidia-96xx)
