[SOLVED] USB External Boot Drive: Error 17 trying to boot wrong UUID!?

Hi REALLY did my best on this one...

TOP LINE it's trying to boot my "/" partition!!!

And it say root (hd1,0) filesystem type unknown...
I'm pretty sure? my boot is hd0,0
How did I install grub wrong.... or am I way off ...?

I am installing from the latest CD onto a USB hard drive.
I had this working yesterday and did the install again today and it's been about 10 hours now of reading and trying stuff. I REALLY love ARCH and I'm gonna get this right.... how cool is it to be able to do a base install in 15 minutes!!!

SO:

After installing grub to the external hard drive and rebooting it boots up to the blue window with both the run version there - fallback and regular.

Now I CAN get about a third of the way thru the boot IF I bot of the installer CD and use the part that allows you to find and boot existing install... then it dies when it can't find fs for ext/3 I think it was.

On a regular boot or the fallback it's the same thing.

Booting Arch Linux
root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type unknown  partition type 0x7
kernel /vmlinuz26  root=dev/disk/by-uuid/   THEN here it's the UUID of the   "/" directory!!!!! NOT the boot partition...

Is that RIGHT???

IF I'm even close here HOW would I edit the menu.lst or whatever I need to do IF I can't mount the system anywhere....?
Can I edit by using to boot cd... I think that's pretty tricky? ...I'd try though.
What about booting from a live CD I gues then go in and change GRUB to boot my Boot partition..... is that what it should do...

Gonna go and read the grub wiki here again now that I MAY have got a clue...
I really really learned a lot today.... cool!

big need for help here...

I never give up though could use a brain on this one....

Re: [SOLVED] USB External Boot Drive: Error 17 trying to boot wrong UUID!?

if you want to install grub again boot the arch core cd and type /arch/setup
then set the swap / and /boot mountpoints but DONT FORMAT THEM. (to do that, select the filesystem and aswer no in the next question). check that before you go on.
then skip the package selection and install and go to intall bootloader, select grub and the disk you want.
chek the list and thats all...
i hope that solve your problem

Re: [SOLVED] USB External Boot Drive: Error 17 trying to boot wrong UUID!?

nice!

So.... new info..

I have mounted the OTHER usb hard drive... the one that does NOT boot...
What I did was boot my 1st successful external USB drive that IS running and then mounted the one that insn't booting...

I am now looking at the menu.lst

and YES...

the one the works is

root (hd0,0) and has what I guess is the correct UUID for the boot partition...yes? sound right?

AND the one that does NOT boot is set to (hd1,0) and also the wrong UUID for the "/" partition...

So now I need to find out HOW to find out WHAT the correct UUID is for each partition....

then can I just change the UUID and the (hd1,0) to (hd0,0) ??
Will that work...

and HOW do I find out what the UUID is....

all good fun!

help appreciated..

Now i will read your post and see if I can use the info...
thanks again!!!!!!!

ideas papreciated..

1) can I change drive and UUID?

AND

2) how do I find every partitions UUID?

Success.... though that was pretty freaky

I was wrong it IS supposed to be ROOT for grub UUID...
got a bunch of other additional places to install GRUB ...went for it and it works with the fallback image...

the regular one goes half way thru the boot...

get back to ya on this...

you can install grub in any disk you want. but that replases the mbr of that disk.
I recomend you to install the grub in the mbr of the flash drive so if you want to use the pen, only make that the pc boot from usb disk first.

I`d never used uuid. I put the disk as /dev/sdX or hdX.

if you habe grub installed on your phisical hard disk, dont reinstall it.
yo have only to add to your /boot/grub/menu.list ht lines of the kernel and root of the flash distro
