i thought that the arch devs was a team always growing and growing, instead of a fixed size array of monkeys ![]()
is (y)our development board really that strict? are you advertising the opening or the need?

Are you referring to Cactus moving on? 2 more devs were just accepted. Check out arch dev public.

We don't accept devs on a constant basis. It has always been based on need. If we don't need more packagers, then bringing more on is just a hassle. Sure, we always need help with code projects, but the people who contribute there are few and far between, and advertising isn't going to get you motivated coders.
No, we're looking for packagers. Simply put, we have too many packages to maintain per person, so we're trying to spread the love around.
Offline
for seeing the need you just have to look at the recently orphaned packages(and I figure that they are not all the packages)
unfortunately at the moment I don't have the time nor the motivation to apply, and probably I neither have the skills.

Well, I applied.. (at least sent a mail to Aaron) But still no luck..

Me too. Seems like the positions filled up quickly.

Insider info:
If you sent an email, you're not alone. A little birdy told me we had 26 people interested... like yesterday. Whoah.
The suggestion box only accepts patches.

Watch out, those might be Cylons.

Insider info- we are humans. We might take more than a day to accept or deny. I'm sure you will hear back either way when it all shakes out.

Congrats, Allan! That was sneaky..

Definitely a fitting position, I've seen a lot of commits signed by him so he'll be of help in more than just packaging - naturally.
I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

Yeah guys, please be patient. I need to filter some of these out and send emails to the dev list so we can do a little vote thing.

I wonder how many applied for the job...

There are packages which are flagged out-of-date for months, maybe Arch really needs many new packagers.

If there are that many applications, could I have my personal assistant? :-9

As of right now, I have 37 applications
37? Thats an awful lot.
IMO only 3 people would qualify 2 out of which were Firmicus and Allan.
The 3rd one will hopeflly make it in the next round whenever that is,
I dont even know if he applied
maybe Arch really needs many new packagers.
IMO Archlinux needs less packages in official repos and/or a repo reorganisation.
eg,
seperate kde, gnome, xorg repos with teams lead by developers who will maintain em more easily

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

IMO most TU would qualify as they already have experience in Arch packaging, repos and so on.
As for repo reorganization, it would have the bad side that it would be more difficult to keep the different repos in sync if different teams are working on them. I mean, when you update glibc for example, you have to update all the packages depending on it accordingly. Also, the current organization with only two "real official" repos (core and extra) keeps our pacman.conf simple.
Yet, I agree with you that there could be a repo reorganization, but I any I see it taking place more at the community (as in "community repo") level, with a lot of packages dropped from extra, especially things like desktop environments, so that only vital stuff that most people need on a desktop remains in extra (for example xorg). What I don't really have a clue about is where libs such as GTK would go with such a structure, but I'd rather see them in extra than in the repo where the Gnome stuff would be because I use a lot of GTK apps even if I don't have Gnome installed on my laptop.
But anyway, Arch is growing and you can always use new devs in such cases, so thanks to all the candidates and good luck to the few chosen ones to be.

Ah that's not true. We have an awful lot of talented people in the Arch community, no matter what people say. Especially a nay-sayer like dolby, heh. 8)

As long as what I need is available to me, either the main repos or AUR.
The advantage of the arch repos is,if a pkg is out of date, I can download the pkg build and update it by changing the version.
