Firefox 3

Hi, why the browser from Mozilla, in windows enviroment known as Firefox, is in Arch(maybe whole Linux) has the name Minefield? It is for me quite bad. I want to have in arch browser Firefox with its own icon... I can obtaint it from ABS (for ex. firefox-nightly). But pacman wont offer me update....
(Iam talking about firefox3 from unstable repo).

OTOH, i really don't understand why an app name is so important for some people. i would use asstunnel2.5 everyday if it's a good app (rexcze, don't take it personal).

Re: Firefox 3

Thanks for reply... I dont take it personal
The app name is not so important (what mentioned asstunnel2.5 is supposed to do? :-) ) BUT
in Firefox renaming there could be problem with internet statistics of using browsers: Try to acces this page http://www.usg.edu/usgweb/browserchecker/ with Minefield and it tells you, that browser is not known. And here http://anoncheck.security-portal.cz/ (in czech) is considered to be only Mozilla 1.9...
So real Linux Firefox called Minefield is not counted in statistics , so it can not help them to be increased.. :-) Thats the one point of view...

Re: Firefox 3

in that case, you just have to change the user agent and it'll be ok.

Re: Firefox 3

go to about:config and use agent as a filter. set it to whatever name you want (not sure about the official u.a. but that's the one should pick up)

Re: Firefox 3

I like Minefield, but it takes me sometimes in trouble. Some incompatibilities and warning messages.

Just changing the user agent on 'about:config' solve this.

Because there was some patching done by arch devs, i presume.
This means they cannot use the name firefox anymore, as you can only use that name when you use firefox with only mozilla-approved patches. To do otherwise would violate the license.

This is what I understood it to be anyways wink

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_conflict_between_Debian_and_Mozilla wrote:

Mozilla Corporation enforces trademarks and claims the right to deny the use of the name "Firefox" and other trademarks to unofficial builds.[2] Unless distributions use the binaries supplied by Mozilla or else have special permission, they must compile the Firefox source with an option enabled which gives Firefox the codename of the release version of Firefox on which it is based, and which does not use the official logo or other artwork.

In other words, the firefox version in the repos is built without permission from Mozilla, therefore it doesn't use the "official" branding. If I remember correctly, if you apply for the permission, you have to get permissions every time you want to patch firefox as well.

For the record, I really don't care about the name of my browser and about this asstunnel thing, what does it do exactly? tongue

Re: Firefox 3

asstunnel2.5 is not a real program.  If you look closely at the name, it's a concept that many men (and women) find offensive.
