XFCE without GNOME or Thunar...

Just wondering if this is doable.

Installing XFCE, and using pcmanfm for my file manager, and not even installing thunar or any gnome stuff, and having a working DE.

Just a thought...

Re: XFCE without GNOME or Thunar...

Doesn't XFCE use GNOME as the DE (or WM, at least)?

no. XFCE *is* a DE; and it uses his own WM (xfwm4)

Re: XFCE without GNOME or Thunar...

it is however based on the gtk2 toolkit which gnome also use which is the reason that gnome application integrates so well into xfce

What's wrong with Thunar?

Maybe he simply doesn't need a GUI file manager. I know - I - don't.

Funny, pcmanfm looks and behaves nearly identically to thunar on my system. pcmanfm is just a little buggy. for instance, when ripping a DVD to my ~/ and navigating there with pcman, the icons blink real fast.
pcman does seem slightly lighter.

Yes it is possible; http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Des … e_packages basically just install the packages that you need instead of the whole desktop.

Like Misfit138 said both file managers are very similar, I think the main difference is that PCManFM supports tabs.

Re: XFCE without GNOME or Thunar...

Try LXDE today.  http://lxde.org/
With this, you get a desktop panel - LXPanel, a file manager - PCManFM, and no XFCE or gnome dependency.
The packages are in arch community repo.
pacman -Sy lxde
Then, run startlxde in your Xsession.
