What I mean is, when firefox3 goes to extra repo, will i have to pacman -S firefox3 or will I just be able to pacman -Syu and Firefox 2 will upgrade to Firefox 3?

The firefox 3.0 package from extra will replace the one from unstable and the unstable one will get deleted.
I'm busy with firefox 3.0, but I can't get it stable without problems when built against xulrunner 1.9 (checked out with FIREFOX_3_0_RELEASE tag). Redhat, Ubuntu and Debian build firefox this way and it should work. The resulting firefox 3.0 package when built with xulrunner is only 3MB installed size.

That's music to my ears!
Can't wait for it to hit extra.

What about xulrunner 1.8? There are packages in community (i.e. kazehakase) that depend on it. Will there be a package xulrunner-compat or the like?
btw I use xulrunner-devel and conkeror, both from AUR.

We'd like to deprecate xulrunner 1.8, as 1.9 will be the future. We will also need this to get plugins to support firefox 3.0 (totem-plugin doesnt work with FF3 now). I don't know if everything in the repositories will build with 1.9, but we'll find out about that soon enough.
If it's really a problem, I think we could have a xulrunner 1.8 available, as both versions can be parallel installed without much problems. The whole layout of xulrunner 1.9 has changed, so except for the /usr/bin/xulrunner binary, there's not a single conflict in files I guess.

Will FF2 still be aviable in the repos after the update or should I keep a backup of it?
I have to regularily use a site from my uni that does not work with FF3.

Arch doesn't keep old packages in the repos. You should keep a backup. Also, if you don't do pacman -Scc, you should have the firefox-2.0.0.14 package in your pacman cache.

@mindfall
and you should add
IgnorePkg = firefox
to your pacman.conf to avoid the update to ff3 as long as your uni website does not work with that.

I'll keep an backup then.

When will ff3 hit the extra repos, anyway? I will have to manually install too, because all I have is firefox3 rc3.(I hear they are the same)

Nope. The package will include a replaces line so it should "just work".

Firefox is currently installed as "firefox3" from unstable.
Are you saying that when firefox 3 hits the extra, it will replace firefox3rc3?

If you're curious about the functionality, check out the PKGBUILD man page, specifically the section about the "replaces" array.

Neat. That'll save me a few seconds. I'll look at the pkgbuild when it hits extra (I like compiling ff from source for some reason, maybe because I had to with the release candidates)

Why not use Konqueror or Kazehakase or Epiphany for your uni site ? No reason to keep two versions of firefox...

As it seems firefox3 has been deleted from unstable.
Personally speaking I would prefer if firefox3 was first included in the stable repos (what, extra?), and then deleted.
I think that's more reasonable.
