Upgrade errors & file conflicts: what now?

I just came back to my ArchLinux install today after an enforced absence of a couple of months.
So, I tried an update using

pacman -Syu

as root.
About 350 MB of downloads were required and it seemed to be going fine.
Then I get this message:

checking package integrity...
(179/179) checking for file conflicts               [###] 100%
error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
gpm: /usr/lib/libgpm.so.1 exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

Can somebody please help me interpret what is required to get things back on track?
