webmin progress

I have now had time to do some work on this, and have a version of webmin that installs well for arch 0.6.

I will now work on making a package file for it.

Oh, if any one wants the tar, which has the correct config files for where arch puts things let me know.

Re: webmin progress

Just wanted to see what the progress on this was.  Do you have a package (or other format that can be installed on an Arch 0.6 box)?

Thanks.

Re: webmin progress

If you do get Webmin running on Arch it may be worth contacting  Webmin's Jamie Cameron then Arch could be included in set up script...

If you do need help with PKGBUILD then please post on forum  smile

Re: webmin progress

I have a tar but not in package format.

You have untar, then run the setup.sh to install.

I will be working on packaging it later.

I have been in touch with Jamie Cameron, and will be again.

Arch is now no 54 on the options list.

If anyone wants to try it out before I get to making a full install file let me know.

I could not get a couple of things working like jabber.

Re: webmin progress

You can download a copy from:

http://www.law4free.org.uk/webmin.1.150.arc.tar.gz

Please note that you will have to untar and then run its setup.sh

I accept all the defaults except where the log files go, which I put in /var/log/webmin

Also, for some irritating reason it runs from where it is untarred with some form of symlink.

To start it you will have to run /etc/webmin/start

It does start after an install, but I have not got around to getting it started automatically.

I have not yet got the samba or swat parts working yet.

Have fun and let me know how you get on.

Re: webmin progress

Yes, I will work it into a package file etc, and I will avoid setting a username and password which will mean you start with using root.

It is very much work in progress.

Re: webmin progress

I see that there have been two people either downloading the file or at least trying.

I have had feedback from one, for which I am grateful, I would also like any other feedback available.

Can people give it a try, then I will work on a package.

No problem.

> I really prefer webmin than ssl

I use ssh and webmin.

What do you mean by a real login? You can edit webmin users.

> very good start so far

Thanks.

>I'm going to try to set up samba

It sort of works. It will allow you to do all the setup etc. The only problem is starting and stopping samba, which seems to be due to the way samba is setup on arch. /etc/rc.d/samba start works though.

>what is the best place to unrar webmin ? /opt/webmin/ ?

Where ever you feel like. It seems to run from where it is untarred. I am talking to the webmin author and hope to improve the setup for arch soon, and make a package of it.

>thanks again anyway

Pleasure.

>I love Webmin

Same here.

Re: webmin progress

Whenever I try to run webmin having used the tar file given above,  I get the error "broken pipe" with no other helpful error.  I took al lthe default except that the log directory was /var/logs/webmin

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Does anyone know if it's possible to install webmin on arch using the standard download package from webmin.com?

Re: webmin progress

Well, yes, but then you have to hack about the config files to get it to work.

I think your problem may be a dependancy problem, so perhaps some one could tell use how to list all packages installed then I will diff that on a working server and see what comes up.

A bit of cpaning may be needed as webmin is in perl, but once I now what is wrong I can make a package for it.

Also I will look at making a package for webmin again.

I have now learnt allot about makepkg that I did not know before.

Initially this was started with freeciv and playing with the beta then finally giving up on a lake of an INN package and writing it myself.

Now I am irritated by the lack if icecc as a package as icewm is handy. So I am working on that.

When I can work out how diff. patch and send work I will post a pkgbuild for that.

Seems like a good plan - let's see if anyone comes up with anything...

Re: webmin progress

heya,

I tried making a pkg for webmin and even posted one, but the problem is that it patches the a lot.

The main problem I see (and what the patches mostly served for) is that the webmin-install script doesn't provide you a way like the variable DESTDIR do: ta virtual root ...

What things can go wrong igf you patch the webmin-install scripts to have the DESTDIR variable?

The other thing is ... the perl-ssl-package that is in staging or so I believe, isn't detected by webmin (when I tested it anyway). You could however configure perl to ssl-tunnel. I don't know if other people gotten webmin to detect the perl-ssl-package.

Some other things are ... generating a password during install and not when the package is compiled.

I suppose other parameters are more easily adaptable ... Anyway the password and the other variables can be made using scripts maybe, th first 2 things are the most important ones.

More of a not: webmin is also installed as non-root in the PKGBUILD I made. I think this is important for a server-package, certainly if ti is possible to easily run it as non-root (I think it doesn't give any problems ... I'm no webmin-user myself ...).

Re: webmin progress

The output is:

./webmin-init: line 21 2989 Broken pipe  $start> /dev/null 2>&1 </dev/null

I started it with

./webmin-init start

I installed it in /opt and used all the defaults except to put the logs in /var/log/webmin instead of /var/webmin
