AMD and Linux

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … tion&num=1

Just saw this on Phoronix. AMD has really come a long way. Guess my next system will be an AMD platform. What are your views?

Re: AMD and Linux

Same here; I am planning to get a new system in the next two months, and that article has really convinced on my preference for AMD.

Re: AMD and Linux

Good to hear. I've always been a fan of AMD. Good to see things are starting to work out for AMD and Linux.

Re: AMD and Linux

I'll stick with Intel, they've been contributing to Linux for way longer

Re: AMD and Linux

Good to know that you can now go Linux with AMD/ATi, and well. I always had nVidia cards because of their better and earlier support on Linux/BSD platforms - and just had a problem once with the proprietary drivers, freezes with Xorg and 71.14 drivers.

But the article mentions the existence of the drivers on the CDs as something more important than it really is. When you buy your card, 99% chance the drivers on the CDs are already outdated and won't install/work properly. I mean, Linux kernel updates constantly and can change deeply between releases, its not like Windows that differs from SP1 to SP2 only in a 1-2 years gap. Maybe including the drivers on CD makes it more of a problem.

Re: AMD and Linux

And you probably want to install drivers trough package management instead of compiling driver from cd each time you upgrade your kernel?

Re: AMD and Linux

This means we have both giants to choose from, so I can pick my favourite regardless of whether it's AMD or Intel.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

Well when it come to processors, it's personal choice

When it comes to Video Cards, I still argue that nVidia has a leg up on quality of product, even if the drivers for Linux are a bit lackluster vs ATI

Re: AMD and Linux

Woah, I would challegene that opinion. Where do you get that idea about quality from? Quality-wise nVidia and AMD/ATI are on a fairly even level.

If you compare pure computing power, nVidia wins right now. If you compare efficiency (which for some is a measure of quality) and perfomance per $, AMD leads nVidia.
