Anyone want to try to explain this strange behavior?

I'm running KDEmod with kdm as my graphical login manager.  When I boot up, if I choose KDE and then login my computer will freeze before the opening KDE banner (the one with the pictures that displays while KDE is loading, the splash screen I think it is called.)  However, if I load openbox, then close openbox, then start KDE it works just fine.  Any idea what the problem could be?  Its very odd.

When I say my computer freezes, I mean dead lock.  I can't ctrl-alt-fn to a terminal or ctrl-alt-bckspce to kill the X server.  I'm guessing it might have something to do with my video card because my card will freeze my computer in the same manner if I try to run any OpenGL application.  I'm using an AGP Radeon 9500 Pro and fglrx drivers from the repos, 8.05

Are those the official ati drivers, or the open source ones?
If they are the official ones, I have heard many stories about them not working.

The open source drivers are way more unstable than fglrx sad

What problems do you have with the open source drivers?

I am also running fglrx and I had similar problems. It seems to me that it is a kdm related issue b/c when I changed the display manager to gdm, the problem disappeared.
