No reboot after upgrade

I fresh installed on an old computer of mine with the most recent core CD, updated and installed Xorg (along with the nv driver and openbox).  For some reason, everytime GRUB loads the system, the screen goes blank with these green boxes on the side, and stops.  Regular and Fallback both act the same way.  It is not a fault of the monitor because it displays the GRUB screen perfectly.

I haven't tried reinstalling the OS because a) there could very well be a simple fix, and if so I will both save time and learn something new, and b) there is nothing to say that the same thing will not happen after I reinstall.  It seems really strange, I have been using AL for a while and this has never happened.

The most recent install isos are here:  ftp://mir1.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/iso/.  Did you use one of those?

Yes.  I used the CD install after having trouble with the FTP install (same problem as this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=48067).
