Hi all,
pacman just installed the new version of firefox3.. I was really excited with the new realease as I already tested ff3 on a windows machine and liked the new design and overall speed improvements.
Anyway seems that my Minefield (Firefox 3 on Archlinux) looks pretty ugly compared with Windows version and with ff3 screenshot found on the internet.. The icons and overall look was really better in Firefox 2.
Is there a way to fix this and get a better default look? I would prefere not installing themes.
Thanks,
Fabio

My FF3 looks OK... Could you post a screenshot of your FF?

Firefox uses the tango icon theme by default now. I know what you mean though, the forward and back buttons look really slick in the windows version!

The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

If you can talk yourself into installing a theme then you could try "Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3" a.k.a. "Firefox 2, the theme, reloaded" or "Vista on XP".

This is how looks my ff3: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=i2mzxv&s=3
It might be a matter of the new default icon set. Anyway I really think the ff2 version really looked nicer.

I finally installed the Firefox 2 theme.. looks just like ff2 now.
The Vista on XP looks good too and use the default theme on FF3 on Win. Anyway it have a problem with menu text. On mouse hover they disappear.
There is a FF3 Vista theme for Linux at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7809 but requires registration and I did not installed it.

There is a package to make gtk apps use/match qt themes. I don't know what it's called, though.

It's called gtk-qt-engine.

ff 3 is fugly! At least if you're used to the graphite/"brushed" ifox-like themes, which aren't ready in 3 yet (the other ones all look too cartoony to me). I quickly reverted back to 2. 3 wouldn't even allow installing themes. I had to save the jar file, then *drag it into the opened themes dialog window.* I haven't dragged and dropped anything like that between applications since windows... it felt kind of dirty. :-o

I use GTK theme Yattacier3, I like it a lot.

I found a theme which should integrate well with kde4: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7574

Thankyou! Everything looks better than the defaults
However, the menu entries dissapear when you hoover above them. Using kde, (clearlooks theme, and gtk fonts in gtk-qt-engine).

Try using other theme (for example, Industrial). I had the same problem with some "exotic" GTK themes.

I had minor issues with the scrollbar look in Firefox, using the gtk qt theme.
I encountered also the disappearing of the menu text items on mouse hovering with some Firefox themes like Qute, Phoenity Reborn, Azerty III, which I liked. But there were too much issues with them.
Now I'm happy with the gtk2 qtcurve theme in KDE, and the Classic Compact Firefox theme, which is highly configurable when used with the Classic Compact Options Firefox extension.
I have no more problem with the scrollbar or the menu text items. The icons are not the ones I like the most, but everything works better and is more stable now like that. So I will keep using these for now.
It takes time to find a configuration which we can live well with, for days and months. But it's worth searching and trying until a good result is reached, with acceptable tradeoffs.

Here is the theme that the XP version of ff3 uses. Looks nice and slick.
EDIT: And here's another similar one that's all blue. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6839
