Hi, everybody,
I've got a rogue mkv file: video's ok, but no sound. No problem with all the other mkv files. Tried google; thing happens, but no clear answers. They mention mkvinfo utility; it barely surfaces on the Arch forums, but nothing (?) in the repositories. Nothing in the Wiki too.
(1) It's possible that mkvinfo comes with a differently named package. If so, what is it?
(2) Is there an alternative player worth trying for mkv?

mkvtoolnix
Also, kaffeine works on the sorry file. Is there a way to discover the difference? Is the research worth the trouble ?
It's just that VLC uses no more than 70% CPU while kaffeine uses up 100% and overheating... I'd like to make VLC work...

mplayer works with mkv. i don't know the syntax to get subtitles up(someone please tell me?:)) but if you use graphical mplayer then you can choose them in a menu.

also there used to be patches for different graphic cards that made mplayer faster. It prolly exists for vlc too..

on the command line, use sid=N or slang=SUB, being N the id of the sub stream or SUB the language code (3 letters for mkv, two for dvd). Use -ass in order to use ass rendering.
You can place all your options in the ~/.mplayer/config file, and you can even create profiles for different protocols/filetypes or per-file configuration... Just dig a little in the manpage...
