i am new to archlinux and pacman. ive already used pacman quite a bit though and after using it i wanted to come here and say, pacman is freaking sweet. genious program, really.
especially for someone like me who has done more fresh installs and hd wipes than i care to admit to and after a new install i have to go searching through my backups and online to find all the latest versions of programs, etc. takes hours to get everything up and running with up to date versions etc.
when i installed archlinux, i figured id be in for the same routine... wow i was wrong. as i followed the installation guide, it got to the point where it says to run pacman to auto update everything to current version. sweet... then as i needed to install things, including xfce, opera, plugins, etc. pacman did everything for me. no searching the web to find current versions with the right package builds etc.
im sure i wont ever be able to go back to not having pacman.
thanks!

I had to laugh! Dolby is really a master of subtlety... ![]()

wow, way to be a dick. my first post here was to say hey your software is great, i love it. and you reply with 'go express yourself on a blog instead next time'... and followed up with a laugh from a dev/forum mod ... lovely.
real good community you got going here. glad to see the forum mods doing a great job promoting this type of behavior, looks really good for the archlinux community.

Calling me names is not fair. If you really feel the software is great and you want the developers to know about it, make a donation. Im sure they will appreciate it more.
Making another pacman rocks thread is totally pointless.

Hi Nec, and welcome to Arch ![]()
I think what's been going on above is fruit of a partial misunderstanding. The point is that we get plenty of those topics, and we even have a specific thread for people to praise Arch's goodness. Plus, you have posted in the wrong section something that doesn't really provide the basis for a discussion, apart from a couple of nods ![]()
Our community is made of different people with different personalities, so if that didn't sound as a very warm welcome, hopefully you'll find a whole load of people whose company you'll enjoy (and hopefully I'll be one of them).
EDIT:
@ dolby
There's no harm in keeping a friendly tone, don't you think?
By the way, moving this to "Arch discussion".

I was trying to point out that Dolby is a bit blunt at times (as you might have noticed) and not to take it too seriously but I guess it came off wrong. We try to keep him in line... (me shakes moderator stick at Dolby)
Anyway places to post this without Dolby being angry:
1) The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=12926
2) The Official Hello Everyone Thread - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=32421
It is not that we don't appreciate your comments about pacman/Arch, it is just if every new user opens one of these posts then peoples problems and questions will get lost in the noise.
EDIT: You will also notice that finferflu is a much better moderator than me ![]()

Nec;
Gladaseeya! Please give FaunOS "Live USB flash" a try. It is archlinux based and boots to 600 packages of pacman packages.
Check it out on Faunos.com.

dolby, i understand where you are coming from, i do..and i apologize for starting out on the wrong foot with you. but you gotta think, my FIRST post to this board and i post it under the place where it says "pacman feedback and discussion" and i get your reply. so yea i was like wtf is this guy's problem? hopefully you can understand where i am coming from ...
and btw i would be more than happy to donate to the archlinux community ... but posts like yours surely arent persuading me to give away my hard earned money. gas is $4.09 man, be nicer if you want to see donations. know what im sayin?
suggestion to forum mods/admins: perhaps the description of the pacman forum should be changed then so noobs like me dont think this is the place for 'pacman is great' posts
"Post about problems with pacman and package upgrades here. [b]Also the place for feedback and discussion about pacman in general.[\b]"
bold section about feedback and discussion should be deleted? reword description to say 'post about pacman issues ONLY'
i will try to make sure i post in the proper forum next time. i didnt know you had thread for arch is best already, from the forum index the only way to see where the proper forum to post pacman ftw was by the descriptions of the forums.
btw thanks for the welcome finferflu

Nec,
The way I understand the "feedback" thing on the Pacman section is more like suggestions and improvements, rather than a generic praise. That's why I took that as posted in the wrong section. But that is no big deal, at least for me ![]()

*shakes stick at Allan* What did I tell you about first impressions? Must we go over this every time?
And Dolby! You're a good sound system, but by gracious your manners! Mind them!
finferflu! You're too nice! Be meaner to first-timers!
Misfit, he never asked about the Wiki! You're too informative!
Cerebral, you're far too sarcastic! Stop that! Yes sir.
