Strange GRUB installation problem and mysterious fix.

I don't know if this is a bug in the installer (at the point where it installs grub) or what exactly...
Someone please help shed some light on this issue.

The problem:
Using the live cd /arch/setup method with:
autopartition
autogenerate config files

I install GRUB on the last step with a default menu.lst file that the installer generates and makes you look at before installing GRUB. Then it successfully installs GRUB.
Upon reboot the word GRUB is repeatedly written to the screen (annoying!).

The mysterious solution:
Reboot the machine using the live cd. Run grub from the command line. Manually install grub via:

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
setup (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
boot

After typing boot and hitting enter I am returned to the archlive prompt.
So I typed reboot to see what would happen and...
Now I get a regular boot into a pretty grub menu with arch happily booting.
Does anyone know what is going on with this?
