ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

I am using the archlinux-2008.06-core ISO image in my Acer Travelmate 2350.
Instead of showing the menu GRUB drops me to the shell. It seems it cannot load the menu.lst due to not finding the cdrom.
I found a similar bug filed under: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6292
It was closed by using isolinux instead of grub.

Is this a known problem?

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

Try using installer version 2008.03.  It does not use grub.

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

i have the same problem. kinda annoying, as now i'll have to do the UUID myself sad
or is there a planned fix? the same disc boots up fine on my laptop.
could someone explain what the issue is exactly, and a possible workaround (with current ISO, as I'd like to understand what's failing)

Could you please post the exact error text? I am trying to determine if this is a grub issue or something else.

No error text at all. I just got a blank screen and the GRUB prompt.
root (<tab> results in
Possible disks are: fd0 fd1 fd2 fd3 fd4 fd5 fd6 fd7 hd0
and neither of the fds is my cdrom.

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

Hmmm, maybe there are some grub options were missing for your hardware - what kind of cdrom do you have?

having the same problem.
here's what dmesg says about my SATA DVD drive

ata3.00: ATAPI: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H62N, CL01, max UDMA/100

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

Exactly the same problem with Acer Aspire 2023. Instead of giving me the menu it just drops into grub command line. My grub doesn't see any drives though, not even the hard drives. Same disc works with another computer just fine.

My drive:
ata2.00: ATAPI: MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-825S, D100, max UDMA/66
scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM            MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-825S  D100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

Update:
My grub gives

Error 12: Invalid device requested

with root + <tab>

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

Hmm. If I take the old pre-grub ftp install image, do I get exactly the same system, but without UUIDs or are there some other differences in the install procedure? So if I just change fstab to use UUIDs after the installation, do I get exactly the same system as with 2008.6 install disc?

Arch is rolling release.  Once you
pacman -Syu

you're up to date.  It doesn't matter what ISO you use.  Having said that, you will want to use 2008.03 or newer.  Pacman changed considerably between 2007.08 and 2008.03.

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

I had a similar problem when I tried to reinstall once. I couldn't get the 2008.6 iso working, so I reverted back to the 2008.3, and it worked

Yes, I know that it is a rolling release. Still, there are some differences in the installations between the ISOs. The one significant difference that I know of is the usage of UUIDs in Overlord. I will try the 2008.3 and just stab fstab to use UUIDs myself. But what I'd like to know is if there are any other new things in Overlord that I should be prepared to repair in the old release.

Not the same issue but may be related, I get this partway through the boot of the 2008.6 CD/USB images.

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

st0nedpenguin, could you edit (hit 'e' on the grub screen) the command line and add "break=y" to it? When you get the prompt, run "echo /dev/*" and show us the results, please? Also, the tail end of the dmesg output would be useful

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

Trying to right now but for some ungodly reason my flash drive refuses to boot anymore with the 2008.6 USB image copied on it via dd. neutral

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

I've got the problem too that I'm redirected at the "grub > " prompt. When trying root (<TAB> it only shows fd0-6 and hd0. No cdrom device (while the install disc is a cdrom).

The old version of Arch Linux won't work because of the change in the mirror format. What can I do?

Re: ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

The latest iso that is labelled unofficial and at own risk is working here. It doesn't use grub to boot.
