Hi,
Updated kernel and I still do not have dvd drive.....
Would very much like to fix this problem so I can install Ubuntu nah! only joking
What output, hooks, tools size of hammer do I need?
May try hooking up dvd drive with a sata convertor see if that works

Hi Mr Green,
What is being detected during the boot?
On my system:
[root@recube johnea]# dmesg | grep -i dvd
ata2.01: ATAPI: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B, 1.01, max UDMA/33
scsi 1:0:1:0: CD-ROM HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B 1.01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

that shows nothing......

@Mr. Green: You have an nforce mobo right? I have had the same problem which I resolved in 2.6.25 with a very messy kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro brokenmodules=pata_amd
This worked because it used the module from 2.6.24 but now even that is broken again. What a dirty fix; the new kernels have been weird with my BIOS and mobo.

I ended up using a ide - sata converter on my dvd drive, which now allows me to use drive :-) .... only system does not boot from dvd drive [may be a bios issue!]
Do not know whats going on its not an Arch problem as far I can tell only seems odd that ide drive would break as most system use them
Again it may be I have AHCI set in bios [hope I got that the right way round!]
Thanks for the heads up, hope you get your drive working soon

I changed to ahci in bois and drive now boots fine,,,,, I can use it under Arch [/dev/sr0]
Still have no clue as to why ide drive would not work,.,, could test it next time side panel is off :-)

Well, I removed Testing from the Pacman.conf and downgraded to the kernel in Core and it works fine now, no messy kernel options needed! I still think it's the newer kernel/pata_amd problem. I don't see any AHCI option in my bios haha, maybe I'm just inobservant or this is an old bios.
I'm glad you found a workaround yourself. I believe my drive is SATA as it is, so it's remarkable it didn't work seeing as my hds are detected fine.
